where can i go (website) to get an accurate and up-to-date (free) listing of units sold for a particular album? (not VH).

Someone at a website for industry people, the velvet rope, might be willing to help you out. But only privately, most soundscan figures can't be published - they're proprietary. You need to find someone who has access to the system to help you out.

You can try the RIAA database, but that won't help unless the album has at least gone gold.

RIAA doesn't report actual units sold, they report units shipped to retailers as reported by record companies. You need soundscan, which represents units scanned at the retail level. Unfortunately the soundscan data is private - it's even illegal to publish it.

Metal-Sludge has on occasion published soundscan data for certain hard rock bands over the last several years. They call it their sludge scan:
