I agree that tension has led to many of the most amazing moments in the history of Van Halen. And it's pretty certain that there will be tension in the future. Any time you have more than one opinion, you can pretty much count on tension being a factor. Of course, it's difficult to tell a person where to draw the line and keep tension a positive. It's very easy for things to get personal if there are already underlying problems between people. Hopefully these guys will be able to distinguish between things and keep a healthy respect for one another, while still pushing each other to create.

I don't think tension is a necessary ingredient to great VH music. Whether pissed off at Dave or happy as clams with Sammy, they've kicked out great music. 5150, OU812, and FUCK are loaded with great songs. Those albums were produced when they were still happy with Sammy. Also, I think they were reasonably happy with Dave when they released Me Wise Magic. While Fair Warning is noted for having some absolutely FANTASTIC guitar playing, it was a turkey with regard to record sales (especially when compared with other VH albums).
Whether pissed, depressed, or happy, that VH crew is simply a talented bunch....

Keep in mind that Ed(for one)is not the same person he was back when they were still a unit. He's got a kid, he's on the wagon, and he's got 20 years of marriage under his belt. I think cohesion will produce better results than tension will at this point. Any tension is just going to dredge up hard feelings and remind them why they broke up in the first place - that could be disastrous for all of us who have been waiting so long for a reunion. On the other hand, they're all 15 years older, too - I'm sure their way of dealing with tension has changed as well. The rumors of counseling come to mind right away - that shit wouldn't have happened back in '85.

"The rumors of counseling come to mind right away"
VH going to counseling......I can just see Dave sitting at a table with Mike, Al, and Ed, with a glassy-eyed look on his face, trying hard to pay attention and show interest.......and 20 minutes after the others leave, throwing the counselor on the table and spankin' ass for a couple of hours. (I'm assuming a female counselor, of course...)

As long is Dave is back, their is gonna be tension. Dave drives Eddie bonkers. But, maybe Eddie is not the same person he used to be. Maybe it doesn't bother him like it use to. I think Eddie misses Dave and his crazy ways. The most important thing to Eddie is that they be friends. I sure hope these guys don't get soft in their old age. I mean, in a few years these fuckers are going to be in their 50's! They better get their shit together and make an album before they die of old age. They need to crank them out like they did with their first 5 albums. Of course back then they didn't have wives and kids and houses with picket fences. They lived in hotel rooms. Those were the days. When MUSIC was the only thing. These guys were put on this earth to play music. They touch a lot of people with the music they make. They need to keep making music in order to make all of us happy. I just wish they would realize the important effect they have on people. Eddie needs to go on the internet and check out some of these websites. I think it would make him wake up and smell the roses. He would crank the new album out in a week! Yes, the whole problem with VH is they do not realize the importance of the music they make. Van Halen is truely a special band. That is THE fucking reason all of us are here on our computers tonight.Peace out.

I agree with a few of your thoughts madden-Van Halen is a special band.
Van Halen's why we are here at VHLinks!
I'll leave it to the band as to what they NEED to do.
They make music for themselves and HOPE others like it-not to make US happy. That just isn't possible!
And, they do check out their links-wouldn't you, if you were them? The band won't put an album out quicker because of their fans, they'll hopefully take the time to do it right so they may have future fans.
Your post reads like you want to be their new manager!!!

Yes, I think I would make an outstanding manager for Van Halen. I would not bullshit them and tell them what they want to hear. I would tell them the godamn truth! Sometimes the truth hurts, but oh well, that's life. I would say, "No more booze, drugs, cheating on your wives, or sitting around smoking and talking shit. It is time for you guys to make a new album and do a massive worldwide tour! You know it and I know it. All your fans are going fucking crazy and you guys do nothing? Time to wake up and smell the roses guys. This is a great opportunity for you guys to make it right again. Look, I'm sorry about VH3. You tried, but it just didn't work. David Lee Roth is just a phone call away. He is the answers to your prayers and every one of your fans prayers. So, what are you going to do guys?" Eddie Van Halen: "FUCK IT, were going to get Dave back and kick everyone's asses madden!Peace out.

If tension equals challenge, then Dave plus Edward in the studio equals great Van Halen.

The issue is many parents are so demented that they see this as “healthcare” for their child and if they don’t they aren’t fulfilling their parental duties. So many of them are all too happy to take...
