Guitarist,a UK based magazine, ran a poll on top 50 rock bands of all time, VH came number 7. This is what they had to say about them:
"as Van Halen chug towards the end of one of rocks most glittering careers, it's ironic that they got it right the first time around; they're eponymous debut was and remains one of the essential guitar albums of all time. Why? As with Jimi Hendrix over a decade beforehand, no one had previously played the electric guitar like dutch immigrant Edward and the sheer beauty of the sound captured the hearts of millions. But the band were always doomed as the quartet featured not one but two genuine stars and the friction between Edward and singer Dave Lee Roth that provided their sheer quality, also proved to be the band's undoing. Roth bailed out in 1985 and the band recruited top beach bum Sammy Hagar to the mic, subsequently - and ironically - ushering in the most successful period of their career. After Hagar in turn jumped ship, the risible Van Halen 3 outing has seen the band actually dropped from Warner Bros and the whole thing has degenerated into tales of dollar-grabbing, co-headlining between Roth and Hagar leaving the rest of VH behind. Edward's tragic illness with cancer has meant an understandably lower profile in recent times"
It pretty much sums it all up does'nt it?
Zeppelin were at Number 1
AC/DC...................2
Queen...................3
G n R...................4
Shitallica..............5
Aerosmith...............6
The mighty Van Halen....7
Iron Maiden.............8
Deep Purple.............9
The Who................10
I also found this in the same article:
"VH were partying in an L.A hotel room when a suitably refreshed AVH convinced himself he could fly & proceededto jump out of a tenth storey window, fortunately into the hotel pool. When DLR was recounting the tale to Alex the next day, the drummer wanted to know why the singer had'nt stopped him, to which Roth replied; " Stop you? I bet 20 bucks you could do it!""
Now THAT made me laff...
You can prbly find the full 50 here

Most successful time was with Hagar? Sounds like these guys have been taking Sam's word on album sales.

Yeah didn't Sam say he'd sold 60 Million with VH? LOL
I'm surprised VH ranked that high, too, since this is a UK poll. Would have been nicer had we at least topped Aerosmith. They've always been overrated, IMO.
I'm still laughing at the "most successful period of their career" line.Maybe money-wise... But that's all.

"Did I not say, 'I think we should shoot him!' I did. Double rainbow on this end. I require a high five. Out."- track 5, on the delicate art of banning
"If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire..."

How could Sabbath not be in the top 10 on a UK Top 50 list?
Oh well, as long as VH is in the top 10 it's all good. I'm glad Nirvana wasn't ahead of them this time.

that story about the jumping out the hotel window wasn't alex it was dave jumping and alex betting he could...
VH1 showed the interview clip of dave telling the story on one of their package shows about 80's rock stars....Van Halen/Dave interviews from my archives:

How the fuck can the Gunners be number 4? There legacy isn't long enough to be mentioned with the likes of Zep and Van Halen.

I guess it depends on the age group of the readers.
I personally voted for =VH=™...Zep...& Pink Floyd in that order But I suppose younger adults would have been more influenced by the 80's.
But Polls suck anyways....
BTW Sabbath were at 13 & Virnana 11..Just goes to show Polls suck !!

No Def Leppard?

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!
