Just curious. During the early 80's when Sam was running around in his yellow jump-suit, did any of you see him? I was wondering what kind of venues he played back then, especially on the VOA tour. Big arenas? 5-6,000 seaters? Was it a good show?
From clips I saw, it seemed like he had alot of spark, running around, jamming on his guitar and stuff.
Any recollections would be appreciated.

Saw Sammy on the 3 Lock Box tour...I had never seen him before...the guy was fantastic...I had seen all the "big boys" by that time as well (Judas Priest, Scorpions, VH, etc...) Sammy stood up to all those bands...put on a great show...he spoke to the crowd as if he knew each and every one of us...I was totally inspired...went out the very next day and bought a red guitar and began my musical career.

I saw him at Mid-South Coliseum in '84 and he ROCKED. I think Krokus may have opened for him. Wow, what a long time ago. Seems like yesterday.

I saw him open for Boston on March 8, 1979 at Henry Levitt Arena in Wichita Kansas. He was great.
I saw him headline on September 25, 1984 at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita Kansas. Again, a great show.
That band that he had back then was very, very good. They really rocked it up. Played some old Montrose stuff too. Both very good shows.

Saw Sammy at the Cow Palace, San Francisco on the VOA tour and he ripped shit up!!! My first show! Some dude hit Sam in the head with a pouch of Red Man and Sam picks it up, looks at it, and says,"Guys, you chew this shit and you ani't gettin' any pussy!"
Words to live by!!!
Zebra opened...big hair, 80's "metal" babes everywhere, drinking everclear in the parking lot...damn fine first concert experience!!

Thanks for the info guys. These headline gigs you talked about, was the place full? How many people can you guess were there? Did he hang from the rafters like he did during LWAN?

Thanks Sactofan. Wow, 18,000? I saw him a couple of weeks ago at the House of Blues. 1,000 there. Not to turn this into a Sam/Dave thing, but did Dave ever put 18,000 in a building by himself?

I didn't follow Dave's solo career too much...I know that i saw VH here in 1991 for Carnal Knowledge...Roughly the same time, Dave had to cancel Arco Arena due to low sales...Arco holds close to 19-20,000 for a show...17,600 approx. for a Kings game...

I know at the EAS/Skyscraper tours Dave pretty much packed the audience in - about 12,000 people. WICKED shows. The LAE tour wasn't as strong with about 8,000 showing. Unfortunately the YFLM tour was not even 600. Now this was in Canada - so the point is - you put Dave in some place like Detroit - during his "prime" solo years - 18,000 would have been no problem

I saw Dave on the EEAS tour at the LA Forum and it was a great show. The place was packed too. I'll never forget the flying surfboard.

Agree with most of this. Plant really just stood there and sang. Same with Daltrey. Morrison didn't know where he was most of the time, he wasn't a great frontman at all, IMO. Not even a great...
