I think the 2nd cd they recorded with Gary probably kicked ass and would love to hear it. WB was used to seeing VH sell 4 million cd's, not 500000. And there was probably no comercial songs on the cd so they did not want to release it. I am sure WB was pushing for Sam or DLR to come back, and thus held up the release of the cd.

....when i go back too " 3 ".....i hear incredible potential......the record just didn't hit bullseye...you dont think the greatest guitar player in the world didn't know that......it's a great record but it sounds like the songs didn't get a chance to mature or get baked long enough

I agree. A different producer could have helped.

The 2nd Gary album would've been better (couldn't have been worse!), but it would not have touched the former excellence real VH fans demand.

Good or bad, I would still like to hear it at this point.
I would also like to hear "Between Us To" and the three new tunes with DLR, but that's never going to happen.
Man, VH sure has allot of tunes to work with, and we know Eddie loves re-using old riffs for new song's.

The new VH record that was being worked on with Gary, before it got shelved, reportedly had a sound that was a cross between "Van Halen" and "Fair Warning".
I can just imagine what it would've sounded like."Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
"This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."
"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

I think VH and Gary was a mutual split. I think everyone came to the realization that a new album with Gary probably wouldn't have faired any better then VH3. Whether Warner rejected the material prompting the split is a definite possibility but I guess we'll never fnd out the answer to that question. In my mind the follow up to 3 would have been a better effort from the band. They had written one record together, done a world tour and that should have made for a tighter unit going into the studio. I guess we'll never know what might have been.

And in all honesty, it's probably best to not hear the second album with Gary... Sorta like using your imagination kind of thing... No disrespect to the man, Gary had juevos to step in Sammy and Dave's shadow... But it just didn't cut...

Gary was stuck trying to sing like Sammy on VH3, and then if the rumors are true that the second Gary album went back to a FW or VH1 sound, then he was probably going nuts trying to fill dear ole' Dave's shoes.

I think what people need to remember with VHIII, is that even with a lot of promotion (MTV, Radio Spots, fliers) it was just a poorly produced album. I agree with you guys there are sparks of brilliance throughout it, when you have accomplished muscians as Eddie, Alex, Michael and even Gary you will have something good come from it. However, the fact of the matter is that Gary's vocals was WAAAAAY too stretched, there is a lack of background vocals, and the entire album is very muddy sounding.
The Gary issue... I loved extreme, and it was well rather odd seeing him in VH. Although I think that everyone can agree when Gary did sing old VH, he had done well. But you cannot take someone who sings songs like more than words, get the funk out, and Muther and stick him in VH. He honestly did not fit right, add the fact that the production plain stinks, and well you get VHIII.
As for what does the future bring for VH, who knows. I do know that I am very happy to say I got to hear VH in three different incarnations, and have some great memories to go with it along with seeing Sammy and Dave live. But unfortunately, VH is a broken band without direction and hope right now. Right now (no pun intended) Eddie and Alex have bigger things to fry than well touring and sorting out the mess with Sammy and Dave.
Ultimately, if those songs from the shelved second album do make it to the light of the day, I think we will see not only a candid look into the band and the inner tensions, but also the daily struggle that Eddie has gone through in the past. So here is to 20+ years of great VH music, which definately is a part of my own life's soundtrack.
