Just picked up an compliation of unrealeased VH songs from the club days all the way to 3. The information I am going to discuss here is probably so old that it will bore some of you. But it is new to me.
On the CD is a live cut from the club days called Show No Mercy, which DLR calls an autobigraphical tune. I'll be damned if the opening riff isn't the same as Take Me Back from Balance. Now any band that's career can be measured in decades, instead of years is going to have instances of this. Still it's pretty odd to hear.
I want Some Action- Pretty cool tune. Some have compared to Get Up which did end up on 5150. I did not see that comparision.
That's Why I Love Ya- This tune has been discussed ad nasuem, but that wont stop me from throwing in my two cents. I like this song. It has something that most of the songs on 3 dont have. It has the ability to make your toes tap. It is nothing earth shattering, but it is more melodic than most of 3.

There's a ton of others on the '77 WB demo tape with either songs in very early forms, or ones that has riffs Ed borrowed later for other songs.
BTW, "Show No Mercy" is a cool tune.Webmaster

I haven't listened to I Want Some Action in awhile, but I think it's Good Enough that is sounds similar to, not Get Up. Also I think there's a part of IWSA that is repeated in Sucker In A Three Piece.

Also, as Brett said, there's a bunch of pieces from the 77 WB demo that reappear on various albums.
Get The Show on the Road has the "we're takin' whiskey" vocal part that ended up on Romeo Delight.
The riff that leads into the Mean Street solo was in She's the Woman.
There's a part of Young and Wild (a terrible song IMO) that appears on Where Have All The Good Times Gone.

Thanks Brett and Glenn,
I knew the club days tunes were used pretty heaviily in the DLR era. I was just surprised to see one pop up 18 years later in the Hagar era.

There are no terrible songs by Van Rothin'!!!!!!"Young and Wild" always reminded me of the Humans Bein' riff juss a lil' bit...some cats have said that I Can't Drive 55, Poundcake, n Seventh Seal all are the same riffage-esque...that's the only part of Take Me Back I likes iz that cool intro from a tune that Diamond Dave described az auto-biographical....I waz born when the lightnin' struck twice....

I think the One I Want riff sounds the same but a little bit faster than the Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love riff.

Oh well, you can always hang your hat on the fact that VH didn't write that piece (of....)!

You're probably thinking of "Let Sally Drive." I don't think it's that bad of a rip-off, though."It's so damn hot... milk was a bad choice." --Ron Burgundy, Anchorman

The bigger question is....when was the last time Ed wrote some new riffs. It seems he is always drawing from old Dave era songs. The first three albums are half made up of songs that appear on either the WB's demo or club bootlegs. Fair Warning was probably the first album of mostly all new material from Ed since the mid 70's. Diver down was all covers, and again dipped back into songs they liked to cover in their club days. 1984 seemed to be the start of something completely different, I just wonder if we'll ever get to see what Dave and Ed might have done after it.

Nearly everything after "1984" was completely new material. And there are very few bands, and I mean very few that have ever had the original repetoire Van Halen had so early in their careers. The amount of great songs they wrote in the club years is almost mind boggling, it's no surprise so many of them found their way onto the records, so many great songs and riffs.

Also when Dave left the band, Ed was able to explore different stuff because Sammy was a completely different kind of singer, so he didn't need to draw from the formula that worked well with Dave. No slight on Dave, it's just that Ed was able to try some different things right off the bat with Sam, and I'm sure he was excited about that, so he didn't draw from the old material, it was a new start, a new sound, and a new band.
