This coming from a guy who frequents the forums quit often but have never really needed to speak up until now. The reason I chose to finally say something is simple...
The day that AC/DC beats Van Halen in a popularity contest is a sad day indeed. I regret to inform this tradgic moment but felt I had to voice my opinion. You see earlier tonight I was listening to a local radio station, WMMS100.7 "The Buzzard" and every Sunday night they have a cage match between two songs. Tonight AC/DC's "You Shook Me All NightLong" took on Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" The object of a cage match is to gain the most votes from listeners over a period of one hour. Sadly, Van Halen only recived two votes
To me this is a disgrace! Not because I'm a Van Halen fan but because people no longer have any respect for music itself. "Hot For Teacher" is a much more structured song lyrically and musically. Granted AC/DC is popular among many people, the point of the cage match is not popularity it is quality. Each voter must give an on air reason as to why he or she thinks one song is supierior over the other, and the most common answer throughout the night was, "Angus Young's guitar playing." What the hell is wrong with people anymore? Let me just say that the reason I picked up the guitar is because of Ace Freley!!! If that sounds sarcastic it is meant to because it is totally bogus! I'm begining to think that people don't even know who Van Halen is anymore. Perhapse this is because of the lack of news with the band but for cryin' out loud don't forget about the past, don't forget who hey once were. thats enough out of me for tonight but let me say that I love the forums and now that the ice is broken I plan to post my insight frequentlly now. First of all, welcome to the links bro!
Second, cool username, whats the deal with it
Third, I dont know whats up with people these days. I saw a site a while back that literally was saying that Ace Freehly is a better guitar player than the great Edward Van.....woah.
And fourth, dont get too discouraged about shook me beating hot for teacher. Thats a kick ass song in itself, and has always been placed higher in the general popular opinion(just not with us, even just with principle).
But hell, it upset you enough to get you posting on the links Again, welcome!

To explain the username I guess I need to express my undying love for the greatest director/writer of all time Kevin Smith!!!
Yes I am a huge fan of his work and found the character Loki in Dogma to be very interesting upon further research. So that is one half, now onto the second. Ofcourse once again one of my favorite people on this great planet we call Earth is non other than Eddie Van Halen!!! The true reason I started playing guitar some eight years ago was when I walked into my best friends room only to be hit by a wall of sound. I asked him what the hell it was and he replied, "Thats Eddie Van Halen!" The song was Unchained and the rest was history. Like my friend I picked up guitar and haven't stopped since. Put two and two together and you get me, EddieLoki.
Thanks for the welcome Seenbad and I totally understand your thoughts on "you Shook Me", it wasn't so much the song but the comments that Ace was a better guitarist that pissed me off. And in the likeness of my idol writer Kevin Smith, I don't think of my self as a lurker, rather I consider, Silent Bob http://www.viewaskew.com/gallery/images/clerks/jaysb.jpg

EddieLoki, welcome to the Links, my fellow Buckeye.
Loki - the Norse god of deceit and trickery; also, the half-brother of the thunder god, Thor.
Eddie - tells half-truths and likes to keep his fans in the dark. His brother is drummer who sounds like thunder.

Don't worry bro. There have ben many sad days in VH's history. Most of them started in 1996 and haven't ended since. Things will get better. Look at the big picture. Eddie knows more chords than Angus

I would venture to say that most people (including myself) haven't really got the musical knowledge to judge a song on 'quality'. It's all what is pleasing to the ear, not what is more structurally sound or full of more difficult changes.
And with VH so out of the public eye like they are, other bands beating them in popularity polls like this isn't surprising. I'll bet I've only listened to one VH album in the last month, and that was 1984; and to be 100% honest, though it's one of my favorite albums, I barely got through it. I'm listening to other stuff a lot more lately, stuff like Rush and Neil Young.
Glad you joined us.

As a bad guitarist but a pretty good musician, I can say that the Hot for Teacher solo is like no other, Ed changes his timing in that 4 times. From 3/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 and then back to 3/4, if memory serves me, I haven't listened to HFT in so long. My point remains the same, here he is jammin along, then all of a sudden a significant time change. Ed's the King.Eat Us and Smile!

Welcome aboard EddieLoki!!!! I agree 100% with what your're saying but until Van Halen get off their asses and do something about it nothings going change. Like Glen said VH have been off the map for quite a while and it's up to them to change that.

Holy Sh*t! I was listening to the same broadcast! It sucked that they got smoked by AC/DC. The Buzzard still rocks though. Nice to see another Akronite on the board!

Van Halen is one of those bands that unless you are a fan or on the verge of being converted to being a fan, they flat out suck. Here's the type of conversation I usually have with people who are non-Van Halen fans...
NVHfan: Hey man what are you listening to?
AxeSlinger: Van Halen
NVHfan: Van Halen? Pfff, what song? Hot for Teacher? That song is so retarded.
AxeSlinger: Why is it retarded, because of the lyrics?
NVHfan: It's just so stupid, David Lee Roth was like the biggest asshole ever. The only sorta cool thing about those guys was Eddie. He was alright.
AxeSlinger: I suppose to video sucks too right?
NVHfan: I don't know, I've never seen it.
AxeSlinger: Ya know the one with the little kids in it? Eddie is playing the solo in the library?
NVHfan: *(sarcastically) Nah, I musta missed that one.
AxeSlinger: I've got the DVD if you wanna see it.
NVHfan: *(sarcastically again) Yeah if I ever have time I might check it out.
To make a long story short, there usually comes a point where I show these detractors some of the videos or play some of the tunes on guitar and they, all of a sudden, "get it." It's like there's a point where they instantly understand VH and start to buy the albums and ask the same Q's like us... "When's their next album coming out? BTW, is DLR back yet?"

Everybody thinks Wendy Williams is crazy, and well, NOW it is true but she has been talking smack about Diddy for a long time as has Katt Williams , 50 Cent, and others. I think Usher spoke to...
