This is my first post on a terrific website. I'd like to thank the powers that be who run this board; it's the only place left to get VH news. The VHND used to be the first place I'd go but now it's dead also.

Let me preface my comments by stating I'm a fan of both eras. I am equally likely to reach for a Dave era or Sammy era CD. I am unlikely to even pick up VH3 though thought Eddie's guitar work was amazing on this album.

After collecting dozens of videos and reading this site and the VHND for several years, I have came to the following conclusions about VH:

1) Both eras represent tremendous accomplishments musically and to bicker about which was best is irrelevant.

2) Currently, DLR without VH is crap; Sammy wihout VH is crap; VH without either singer is crap; VH with any other sing is going to be crap. These guys all need each other to even have a future and I don't think that's even a guarantee. If a reunion could have occured 2-3 years ago, maybe the success could have continued. But the passage of time is now relegating VH to the "classic" designation. Furthermore, times have changed and it's nothing but garbage on MTV now. The welcome they received when they walked on stage with DLR years ago would not be repeated now. Sam and Dave's recent appearance on MTV was a joke and no-one even cared.

3) After reading everthing I could get my hands on about the band and with all the ill-will among current and former members, I don't see how they could put everything aside and have a reunion.

4) I don't think Eddie/Alex VH give a rats-ass about the fans. Eddie has said on numerous occasions he never wanted to be a rock star; I'm sure he's in his 5150 studios with Alex writing and playing music and is quite content in doing so. As an artist, he appears to be the introverted, self-destructive prototype. I just hope he doesn't suffer the fate of so many before him.

5) If the reunion never occurs, all parties better get used to playing with 38 Special at the local fair. (It hurts to say that one).

6) Sammies suggestion about he and Eddie going fishing and trying to re-establish a friendship before doing anything musically is a great idea. I think a tour with both Sammie and Dave would be a huge success. Before this could occur, they would all have to sit in a room without lawyers, friends, family, managers, record companies, etc. and re-establish a friendship and forget the past. DRL would also have to turn off the 1984 act and move on. Everyone would have to put aside their ego in the interest of making music.

BTW, where can one get DVDs of old VH footage? I have about 20 VHS tapes that I'll soon me burning to DVD. Does anyone know if "Live Without a Net" will be available on DVD? I'd certainly be willing to share/exchange my DVDs if it's legal and anyone is interested.

1. By "future" you mean "reliving the past" Eddie, and Alex for that matter, could have a future doing something else musical, maybe not on top of the rock world, but scoring movies or whatever.

2. Pardon my French, but who the fuck cares? Do you send letters to Eddie telling him what you've been doing, when you're gonna get a promotion at work... Why should he tell us what he's been doing, when a new album comes out, if you want to buy it, buy it, if you don't, don't. If a new album never comes out, just keep coming to this message board and tell everyone how Eddie doesn't care about you. That should do a lot of good.

3. Sammies? 'nuff said.

Dude, are you insane?
How could you even mention 38 fucking Special in the same breath as the MIGHTY VH.
Also man, in case you haven't heard, Ed has been going through some shit lately. Have you ever been through cancer, a divorce, being dropped from a label after 20 + years, etc.?

Welcome aboard man, but please, know what you're talking about before posting.

I think when the smoke clears, Van Halen will be back in some form, if not many.

I think eventually, unless Dave and Sammy both get back to making kick ass new music, their drawing power may fade, since it already has at least as far as cd sales. Yeah, the tour was very successful in most cities, but most fans of each want them back with VH one more time.

Ed and Al can go on without Sammy and Dave, as well as Mike if it came down to it. The music would really have to kick ass to bring back the fans they alienated by going on without Mike, but I doubt they would care if they loved the music enough to put it out after the long silence.

Mike could go on, with the Planet US project, and pretty much a slot in any band he ever wanted to jam with, for one night or for a project. He brings solid bass playing, knows how to lock into solid grooves, and his background vocals are the best in the biz. Give me a call Mike, and you can jam with us good ol' boys anyday.

I think as I've said before, that the only way they could make everyone happy, including themselves, is to put out a new cd with each guy singing, as well as any new singer they have in mind, or the all-star cd we've heard so many rumours about.

If Dave or Sammy or Gary wouldn't go for that, then they need to forget the egos and have some confidence in what kind of music they are still capable of making. Same for Ed and Al. NO matter what any of them think, the music they make with anyone will be better than most if not all new music out there today if they all work together and play to the strengths each line-up has. It's all about the chemistry and the groove. It's hard to groove with someone when you don't even want to look them in the eye, let alone be in the same room with them.

If it's all about album sales, then the line-up's cd that sold the most would be the best. But if it's about the music, then the music itself would be the determining factor, and in my mind there has never been any bad Van Halen music. Most of it great and some very out there and different, but none of it was bad. If someone has the bag to go in and sing or write a song from inside of them, then that is pretty special, no matter how good or bad people deem it. It's a release, a way of saying things or getting them out of your system, that some people who don't play music may not understand.

VH is far from dead. I guarantee it!

maybe vh should do what ac/dc did for their last record. stiff upper lip was essentially a blues/boogie record that was unpretentious and comfortable. i don't know how it did commercially and i suspect that at this stage in the game but for acts of legendary status trying to top past sales figures is pointless and they know it. it's about putting out quality material that hopefully is well-recieved and is true to the bands spirit and philosophy.

it's true though, the ultimate for many fans would be for vh to release something that rocks triumphantly, proudly and with massive hard rock elephant balls and is really melodic and hooky in the choruses (me wise magic, anyone?)

i also like the idea of a bluesy, low-key approach - a concept album. i'm not so sure about multiple singers. pick one, the right one and make it work. i think the idea of a bluesy album with roth (i know he can still do it) would be well recieved. it's high concept. not just new vh with roth...new vh with roth with a unique (led zep) approach. thing is, dave wouldn't even have to been in-studio with eddie at any time. the producer can coordinate such.

What kind of welcome mat is that? The dude spends who knows how long compiling his first post on the forums and you come back with nitpicks over his opinions, and spelling, as well as telling him he has no idea what he's talking about and that he should basically go learn some more before posting?

check your tone before decide to elect yourself as the vhforums welcome mat. I think we are a little more friendly than that around here.

Amen to that, seen.

Maybe ktd's first post wasn't a shiny happy thing, but whatever brings a lurker onto the board as a member is cool with me. Frustrations are still high for good reason, and if it takes a vent to stick your foot in the door, so be it. Welcome to the board ktd -I'm sure you've got plenty of "happier" things to say as well in time.

Alright, my apologies...
I just thought that 38 Special & VH are worlds apart. He's entitled to his opinions. You know I respect everyone's around here.

Nice volley, aftershock.

I agree that VH and 38 Special are in totally different leagues, but the point about what VH is headed for if they continue to be "non-playas" is frighteningly true, unfortunately.

i suppose commercially the idea of a santana like record for eddie would make sense in that with various singers and variety there would be a greater chance of a single breaking out. not sure if eddie is right for that kind of thing though.

BTW, KTD, I asked the same question about LiveWAN on DVD last week.
Unfortunately, it's nowhere to be found. If I find it, and I am searching, I'll throw ya a shout.

Aftershock 5:

No offense taken; I agree 100% that VH is not even comparable to 38 Special. My only point was that their commercial appeal may never be what it was, which really I don't care about. I just want some new music. I would even settle for a CD with Van Halen consisting of Ed, Al, and Mike WITHOUT a lead singer. Remember Pleasure Dome on the last live CD? Those guys played while Sammy was taking a break and it was awesome. In other words, anything would do.

It is indeed a shame that such a great band, whichever incarnation you like, cannot put aside their egos and make some new music.

Chemistry in a band has to be a nebulous thing. VH had it with both Dave and Sammy. They didn't with Gary. VH is a great band and Gary is a very talented singer but it just didn't work. That's why I feel a 4th singer would be a mistake.

For those posters who defended my harsh initial statements, thank you. I'm simply going through VH withdrawal (a long withdrawal) and haven't been myself lately.

P.S. It's Sammy, not Sammie

</font>
Aftershock has been a dick all over the place, and he doesn't respect shit except his right to whine... Aftershock should have his IP checked now to keep him away the next time Brett wants to close due to asschumps like our boy Aftershock...
