First of all, just wanted to say this site kicks!
My thoughts...
It's my opinion that this Sam/Dave tour has proven that Dave is still marketable. EVH has to see that. As a 47(?) year old man, how can Eddie be so stubborn and egotistical? We are all SUPPOSED to get wiser and more mature with age. Does Eddie really think that today's music world is missing him that much? As a fan, I miss him but he needs to realize that the sun is about to set on his little opus and he has one shot left. Dave wants in. Ed is recording. Mike is chomping at the bit to play, and Al.... well who knows what Al is up to...

The hold-up? Egos, and a certain tour to name a couple. Nobody really knows, it seems. We're all a bit frustrated. Just keep your love alive, brudda!

However, most of all, I think he truly does not like Dave and he's not going to let fans tell him who he should work with, nor tell him how trivial he's being for not wanting to work with someone he can't stand.

Back in 1978 when the debut album was released, I felt that DLR and EVH each accepted their own roles of flamboyant/over-the-top front man and serious/dedicated/talented musician and were very comfortable with what each had to offer the band. Ed always appeared down-to-earth and more than happy to have DLR be the strutting peacock of the band while he himself provided the distinctive VH sound. Ed was the normal, relaxed, 'I'm off stage now' kind of guy, while Dave seemed to be always 'on show', even at home. You just couldn't imagine one without the other in the band -- it wasn't a competition between them. Dave was so aware of the visual/image aspect of the showmanship, and Ed just seemed to shut out that part and get consumed by creating the music and the distinctive VH sound -- he didn't seem to take Roth's outrageous shennigans and boasting bravado very seriously -- that was just Dave being Dave -- and they each brought the band together so well. Maybe it got to the point that Ed wasn't comfortable with the way Dave was portraying the band -- maybe he wanted more recognition for his efforts (although he was highly respected in his own right for his muscianship by then). I was disappointed when the band broke up, but mostly, I'm sorry that the split got so petty and nasty -- too bad they did not keep the feud to themselves and save some face -- a bit unprofessional, but then pent-up feelings boiled over and accusations couldn't be taken back. Guess it's true that 'you always hurt the one you love', because the camraderie between the band members was so deep, the ensuing insults and accusations were taken to heart. I don't think they have really forgiven each other, and at this point, they should.
