NEW YORK, May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Jackson's 1983 music video ``Thriller,'' a John Landis-directed mini-movie that
propelled the album to the top of history's all-time best-seller list, sits at the top of VH1's ``100 Greatest Videos,'' premiering
Monday, May 7, through Friday, May 11, from 10:00-11:00 p.m. (ET/PT) each night. Second on the roster of ``100 Greatest
Videos'' is Madonna's ``Like a Prayer,'' followed by Peter Gabriel's ``Sledgehammer.'' Nirvana's ``Smells Like Teen Spirit'' and
Guns N' Roses' ``November Rain'' round out the top five.
Chris Isaak (``The Chris Isaak Show'') hosts the five-hour, five-night special, which counts down the most memorable, innovative
and controversial music videos of all time. ``100 Greatest Videos'' follows in the tradition of VH1's critically acclaimed ``100
Greatest'' hit specials, featuring unforgettable video clips and exclusive new interviews with the artists themselves. Boy George,
Alanis Morissette, Brian McKnight, Erykah Badu, Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora, L'il Kim, Pat Benatar, Lionel Richie, Everlast,
Herbie Hancock, Queen's Roger Taylor, Sheila E., Stevie Nicks, Duran Duran's Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes, Foo Fighters'
Taylor Hawkins and Carmen Electra are among those who talk about their personal-favorites of the past two decades. The ``100
Greatest Videos'' were ranked by a panel of experts from VH1.
In conjunction with the on-air special, VH1.com will launch a comprehensive area dedicated to VH1's ``100 Greatest Videos,''
featuring clips from all 100 featured music videos and a complete recap of the entire list. In addition, fans on VH1.com will be able
to cast their vote for the ``Greatest Video of All-Time'' and voice their opinion by participating in several of the message boards
dedicated to the special.
Highlighting VH1's "100 Greatest Videos":
-- Made-for-video superstar Madonna leads all artists with six notches in
the top 100, followed by Michael Jackson with five. Aerosmith, Janet
Jackson, and Van Halen/David Lee Roth each placed three videos on the
list.
-- The oldest video on the list is Bob Dylan's pioneering 1965 film of
"Subterranean Homesick Blues," directed by D.A. Pennebaker. The
newest are Bon Jovi's "It's My Life," Red Hot Chili Peppers'
"Californication" and Creed's "With Arms Wide Open," all from 2000.
-- 53 of the videos on the list made their debuts in the 1980s -- when
the growth of the art form exploded with the advent of MTV -- followed
by 42 from the '90s. There is one video relic from each of the stone-
age '60s ("Subterranean Homesick Blues") and '70s (Queen's "Bohemian
Rhapsody").
-- The top 100 is split even between videos featuring groups and those
starring solo artists. There are also three videos featuring
superstar duets, including "Walk This Way" (Run DMC and Aerosmith),
"Whatta Man" (Salt-n-Pepa and En Vogue), and Michael and Janet Jackson
in "Scream" -- also the most expensive video ever made.
-- Every music video has its maker, and a small royalty of 14 talented
auteurs is responsible for over a third (38) of the top 100 videos.
Tops on the list is Mary Lambert and Spike Jonze with four each, with
seven other filmmakers notching three a piece, including Spike Jonze,
Russell Mulcahy, and the team of former 10cc stars Godley & Creme --
who also self-directed their own hit "Cry."
-- Video artistry is not all bright flashy colors -- eleven are
black-and-white gems like Madonna's "Justify My Love," Chris Isaak's
"Wicked Game," The Police's "Every Breath You Take" and Metallica's
"One," among others. And the form also injected new life into the art
of animation, with five non-live action videos making the list,
including A-ha's "Take On Me," Dire Straits' "Money For Nothing" and
Korn's "Freak On A Leash."
The complete list is attached.
VH1's ``100 Greatest Videos'' premieres Monday, May 7, through Friday, May 11, from 10:00-11:00 p.m. (ET/PT) each night. On Tuesday-Friday, each new
premiere installment will be immediately preceded by a repeat airing of the previous episodes. ``100 Greatest Videos'' will be repeated on Saturday, May 12 from
1:00-6:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The complete schedule for VH1's ``100 Greatest Videos'':

Didn't "Right Now" win MTV video of the Year? How is that not on the list? What is so special about Jump? I think the song is making it more than the video.

Jump came around about the time MTV was getting started. It was fun, cool, and everything rock embodied at the time. All the kids thought VH was it because of it. All the following rock bands and their videos followed the basic sound stage run around looking crazy video pattern, but VH was the originator.
I believe afew years ago several of the old MTV vjs got together and Jump was named favorite all time video. VH created 80s rock with their flamboyance.

I just don't get VH1's pure obsession with Nirvana. Even list they have on there, Nirvana is top 5 ahead of VH and GNR. It truly pisses me off.![]()

Thanks for the info!
I agree that 'Right Now' should have been included. Yet, Nirvana is up in the top 10. Give me a break.

The real irony about Right Now is that the band hated the video, and then it wins awards. When I saw VH on that tour Sammy went on a tirade about how much they hated the video and were going to re-do it.
If I don't respond to you it means I have you on ignore, which means you are a douchenozzle.

Chris, you are correct, Dokken was never a headliner, always a opening act. I liked both bands alot, but Dokken had so much fighting inside the band that they were doomed. By 88, Ratt had already...
Why Did VAN HALEN Choose DOKKEN...
