Yeah, Without you is a great song.
And so are One i want, Dirty water dog and Fire in the hole !
Van Halen 3 is not the best album of VH (everybody knows the sound is not so good and they're some fillers), it's not even a great album, but it's one of the most ambitious album of the band with Fair Warning and F.U.C.K.
Eddie was on fire and wanted to explore new musical territories. And personnaly, it's exactly what i wanted from a musician of this caliber.
Not a great album, but for me, 3 is way more interesting than 5150 or OU812.

It's funny because i consider Human beings like one of the worst songs of their catalog.
Hate Sammy vox on the verse. Don't like the sound too while i love the production of Balance. It's a little muffled.
The only thing i don't like on Without you is the voice of Gary on the pre-chorus. Besides, the solo kills everything and the riffs are crunchy !

I never had a huge problem with VH3 but obviously wasn't my favorite. That said, I am so happy for it today because its really a different side of Eddie. I can appreciate it more with his passing than when he was living. Obviously would rather have had a new album from CVH in 1998 but the album and song Without You is different in 2021 than last year at this time

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman

Without You and Fire in the Hole are really the only two songs that I listen to on III.

    Great? Maybe not. Good? Sure.

Edit: I just listened to it intently, not as background music. The song is much too long....it goes on and on. I don't love the start of the solo section (@3:00) where Ed is riffing ala ACDC - seems not very VH like.

Probably a huge coincidence but definitely kind of freaky.

    4. You don't record the backing vocals as if you'd placed the mics in a different zipcode to the one where the vocalists are standing.

    5. It might as well have been an ode to Dave and Sammy called (I can't write a song) Without You.

No wonder Dave couldn't get a handle on the tunes that Eddie was playing him in '96. It was the stuff that showed up on VH III
I never bought that Ed wasn't familiar with the Extreme catalog when Gary joined the band. That was a blatant lie and likely ego driven because of how amazing Nuno is. I also think they should have played an Extreme song live for the fans to introduce Gary better. So Ed f**ked up with introducing Gary properly to the band. Pretty sure Ed could have figured out the solo to Get The Funk Out amateurs on Youtube can do it. That would have been a good one to play on the "3" tour. We will never know the full potential of this lineup though because they never released a followup album. VH3 it was obvious it was experimental for Van Halen and Gary always gets sh*t on for this but it's all on Ed he took the risk. Without You though did quite well on rock radio and was a hit. The live shows with Gary were awesome. I wish they would have finished that second record.

I remember reading it was about Ed getting clean, getting help and free of his alcohol addiction. So it's about getting rid of addictions is my guess. Live the song ended with "life is very short and there's no time".
