"Without You" Is a great song!

I know most of us love to hate everything about Van Halen 3.

But there is some tunes worth listening to on that album.

I usually don't call a song "Great" untill I give it some time and see if it still has the same appeal after a few years. And I can honestly say "Without You" is safe to put in that catagory.

Its got some great drumming and awsome guitaring by Ed as usual, and yes, even Gary sounds great.

The one problem I have with the song is it changes too many times. Its got that slow down near the end that kind of kills the groove. It sort of just fades out, rather than going out with a "bang".

I think if Ed had chopped about a minute and a half off the song, it would have been a much bigger hit than it was.

Am I alone in my thinking?

I agree, "Without You" is a killer song. I also like Fire in the Hole, Ballot or the Bullet, From Afar, Dirty Water Dog, I could go on and on. VH 3 Rocks!!

You are kidding right.

You mean the part where he's just playing the chords then muffling the strings with his left hand while he does the little percussion thing with the pick. You know the same thing he did on "Take Me Back"...."Don't Tell Me".......

The part right before the smokin' solo.

Anybody ever notice the hum of his 5150 during this part. You can just hear........ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Without You is a good song, but my fav has to be YTTD. Other quality songs on that album are one i want, ballot or the bullet, fire in the hole, and dirty water dog

Without You seems to me like the only song they somewhat took there time producing . The rest of the album had great potential , especially Ballot Or The Bullet . IMO For whatever it's worth .

I put Ballot or the Bullet down there with AFU and Spanked.......and that would be in the "piece of shit" category.

BOB has a cool intro......but the music is just too hard to put lyrics to. The lryics are horrible.

"Without You" is an awesome song. Personally, I liked it through and through. My favorite off of VH3 is "Year to the Day" though. But they took off my fave song: That's Why I Love You. Seriously, TWILY is one of my favorite songs ever. Ed's solo is short but fuckin' sweeeeet. I really wish they'd left it on...in place of "How Many Say I".

Without You is the best song off VH3 . It could have been a little more focused in the arrangement and would have been better if it had the classic "Brown" sound on the guitars, but it is still very good.

3 had a lot of potential but many things went wrong with the album. My biggest gripe was the production. You don't have a guy who produces television theme songs produce a rock n' roll album!!!

You guys are right though, "With Out You" is probably the best song on the album. When I first heard it on the radio I thought to myself, this song is okay but I hope it's not the best song on the album. Unfortunately it was.

Yup, those were my thoughts too, Bernz. And as I said, "Without You" could have been even better than it was if it was simply edited a bit. If you compare it to a song like "Panama", it goes on for about 2 minutes longer and it changes its tone about 3 times before ending. It just didn't finish strong, like "Panama".

cleansl8 also made a good point. It sure seems they sort of slapped VH3 together without a lot of polish and editing. A bit more time spent in the studio may have made that a much stronger album.
