This is gonna be long, so please bare with me.
I have been a member of this site for about a year and a half, longer than some, not as long as others. Since I have been coming here there has always been Sammy-vs-Dave topics, and arguments, which to an extent is good. However it seems that recently the arguments have heated up, and became more mean spirited. A perfect example is the Vote for Dave or Sammy thread that is going on right now, what started out as a half way decent thread has degenerated into yet another heated argument between Dave and Sammy fans. I have taken place in more than my fair share of these over the year+ that I have been here, but have tried for the past 6 months or more to stay out of these kind of threads. I have had my share of arguments/fights with some members, the ones with Pojo and Brownsound come to mind first, and while they were somewhat fun, after a year and a half they grow old. I think that someplace along the line we all forgot that we are VAN HALEN fans! Yes we are also Sammy and Dave and Gary fans, but the common link on this site is that we are all Van Halen fans, we may prefer the Dave era or the Sammy era or the Gary era, but it is all VAN HALEN, not Van Hagar, not Van Roth, and not Gary Halen, it is VAN HALEN! I think we have all lost site of this fact. There are other boards out there to discuss Dave(The DLR Army is one of my favorites) although they maybe a bit extreme( ) they are die hard fans, and Dave should be proud of there devotion and loyalty. For the Sammy fans there is Waboritaville(Located at the SHND, and run by me) although not as big as the Army, we are all loyal and dedicated fans of Sammy, and proud of or loyalty. I invite all Dave fans to stop by Waboritaville and discuss Dave-vs-Sammy, and I invite all Sammy fans to check it out and see what you think. I can not speak for Sarge, but I doubt that he would care if Sammy fans wanted to stop by the Army and have the same disscussion. I know this is long, and that I have rambled alot, but I hope that I have gotten my point across. Please try not to lose site of the fact that we are all VAN HALEN fans, that is why we are all here, and lets all try to remember that before we explode all over another VAN HALEN fan for holding a different preference than you.Up Front Fanatics.......................................... .................................................. .........................................I never met a man does'nt owe somebody somethin

Well put, bigdogdo. I'm sick of the Dave vs. Sammy argument. There are about 4 or 5 topics with Dave and Sammy fans bickering back and forth (I admit, I've participated too).
It's too bad that Van Halen has been silent so long, making the Dave vs. Sammy debate the main topic of conversation. Hopefully something big will happen soon to make up for all the waiting.

Definitely a true statement here and good post by Bigdogdo. I've only been a member here since June although I've been browsing here for almost two years. I participate and start these Dave vs. Sammy arguments because there's nothing new to talk about regarding Van Halen and because if and when they finally do announce who is singing for them it'll be really interesting to see what people are saying about Van Halen and that particular singer then. Especially all of the Hagar fans that think Dave is nothing but a waste.

Good post Bigdog. This site has become the PD pt. II the last few days with the Sammy vs. DLR fighting in every VH related thread. I never thought that would happen.
The Sammy vs. Dave arguements never solve anything. People will like what they like.

Yep.. the Dave vs. Sammy argument is simply ridiculous. Those two eras of VH are very different, and you cant compare the two.
Besides, Gary was the best, right?

Kim Mitchell is Canadian band track 5. He's awesome!!! He is a great guitar player too and is of my favorite bands, he is very well known in Canada, but he is not known in the States.
Actually I would say most of the best Canadian bands never made it big in the U.S. Right Now you're reading my post!

I've been a member of this site...and others for a shitload of a long time...
Fact of the matter is this...
I'm a Roth fan/Classic Van Halen fan...
I suppose that makes me a fan of Van Halen as you state it...
I'm not a fan of Sammy Hagar in the least...which makes me, not in the least, any less of a fan than any other...
I know more than most about the Sammy era of VH because I'm a big fan of Eddie's (as a musician these days)...which doesn't to me, make me any MORE of a fan than any...
What's my point?
Good god man...the debate is what makes all these forums so damn fun...
None of us want to come over to a forum of stepford children who all say..."I love ALL versions of Van Halen...they are all so neat! Can I make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?"
If that's what you want...than I question the attitude you have about this band...being a Hagar or Roth fan...
The passion about this band is in it's music...but more importantly...in it's fans passion for singers...
That will always carry me...and make sites like these fun...
The problem is when people in a debate take their side to damn seriously...
That's when the fun ends...
By the way...without classic VH...would there even have been a VH?
Just curious...

True, I can't agree with you more here Pojo. I read some of these whiny wimpass posts by some of these morons that contain sentences like "I love all versions of Van Halen!" , "Why can't we all just get along?" etc.
Are you people rock and roll fans or priests? Seriously, it's rock and roll - quit getting your panties all in a bunch over this shit. Afterall, you're not in the band so what do you care if we're all on here fighting over this and slinging mud at each other? IMO, my attitude echoes the music of Van Halen (especially the early stuff.) I flat out don't give a shit, don't kow-tow to anyone, wanna get drunk, wanna get laid and screw off. Plain and simple. That's what half of those songs are about in the first place.
I just can't see listening to "Bottoms Up!" or "Feel your love tonight" and then being a whiny little bitch who can't take someone criticizing them on a message board. Jeez, get over it already.

I seem to remember someone getting their panties in a bunch about a little criticism... wonder who that might be?
Whatever part of VH a person likes is fine. If it was all clear-cut and obvious, there'd be nothing to talk about. While there are some morons to be found on the various boards--maybe that isn't a strong enough word--simply saying you like all of what VH has done doesn't make you one.
There's nothing wrong with some lively discussion. Some of us like talking Dave vs Sammy, and some of us don't. If you don't like it, don't read it. Don't bitch about it, either.

well, i agree with the idea that we are all van halen fans, but yeah we have preferences. i'm willing to state my piece about why dave is better than sammy, i'm not afraid of doing so. i'm not an advocate of flamefests, but i'm all about the facts.
sure, i'm in the know about van hagar stuff too. i like some of it too (whoa, blasphemous), but the fact is that vh with dave kicked ass. go listen to panama and then go listen to spanked. hmmm, obvious choice.
and to yankee rose, once again i can't agree with you more. (except for that dave vs. sammy thing) kim mitchell kicks serious ass. :hellyeah:
no, loverboy wasn't our best. i know, it'll take a little time for that to sink in, but bear with me. i know you've heard of rush, and i think that they are our best. also the guess who kicks ass.
one band comes to mind when you mention bands that never made it big in the US: the tragically hip. they are vintage canadian rock and roll.

Loverboy is a great band, I saw them live a few months ago, and they put on a great show!
It's all a matter of opinion of course but I like Kim Mitchell more than Loverboy. I saw a book on rock music at Chapters and it had the best guitar players of all time with Kim Mitchell being No. 1 and EVH No. 2. Obviously the guy who wrote it was Canadian.
A few other Canadian bands that I like that are not known in the U.S. are...
Gowan, Colin James, Lee Aaron, David Wilcox, Wide Mouth Mason and The Northern Pikes.
Gowan should be known by people in the U.S. now, he is the new lead singer for Styx. I think that it's good that he is the singer for them, just because he can make a lot more money in the U.S.
But I think Gowan solo is a lot better than Styx!
