There are two relatively new Sammy interviews posted at the Van Halen News Desk. They feature some of the most intense quotes I've read from the Red Rocker in awhile.
I'm a huge Sammy fan, but once again he has distorted the numbers.
"We (Sam and VH) sold 42 million, they (with Roth) sold about 28 million. Tell me how it stacks up. I had a successful career before VH. He (Roth) didn't and didn't have one after. Before I joined VH shows were like 85/15 (guys/girls)
When I was in, it was about 50/50. I wrote some cool love songs. We diversified ourselves."
Good stuff on Roth:
"I came in VH, and we went on the easily beat what they done before. I squished Roth's solo career. I was nervous about Gary doing the same thing to me, but it didn't happen. I laughed when I heard (3) it."
Ray Daniels
"He wanted cuts from the old catalogue. I said fuck no! I stand on stage and sing "Jump" and "Panama" all night and don't receive a dime from those albums. We've sold 40 million before you show up and you're telling US what to do?!"
On VH reunion with Roth:
"i wish they would just hang it up. It would be the ugliest reunion in rock history.
Alex and Ed should just go out and make musicals. Why toy with lead singers? Van Halen is one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all-time, and would hate to see them cheapen the name anymore that what they already have."
Hard-hitting stuff!
That's a rough resketch of the high points. Read it for yourself. He talks alot more about the business aspect of being in Van Halen & Montrose, life on the road as a struggling rocker in his 20's trying to support a starving wife and kid, his tequila,
and other topics.

There is most definitely some sour grapes, if you will, between Sammy and the boys. Hell, Dave did the same thing for alot of years till Eddie asked him to sing on the BOV1. Crazy stuff, our Van Halen band. Oh well, all should be better shortly, I hope. Out.

Someones gotta teach Sam some addition or something
Regardless.. didnt come across very well.. that of course could have been partially the work of a hack reporter trying to drum something up, but not a good vibe at all

Maybe Sammy is including those Footloose albums again.
I'm a huge Sammy fan, but he's not coming off very well here.
And this is rock and roll, who cares what the male/female ratio of the crowd is? What matters is VH was playing to full houses in those Dave years. And given that each Sammy VH album sold less than the one previous to it, I don't know why Sammy is bragging about altering the VH audience.
Ahh, Van Halen, pro wrestling at its best.

No shit! LOL. As much as I hate to admit it, I thought the same thing when Dave fell of the deep end with his Vegas act. Between the two of them, I sometimes have a tough time picking which one to just laugh at the most. I dig em both, but God Damn it! LOL. Out.

The reunion rumors have to be bothering Sammy. I mean he admits Cherone worried him...so if Roth comes back he's just afraid his tour of duty will be snuffed out.
The soap opera is quite hilarious...and entertaining

Sammy's DEFINITELY got some arithmatical problems here!
A) Dave was in Van Halen from 1974-1985, which at last count, is 11 years, not the 7 that he claims.
B) According to the RIAA, Sammy has sold 4.5 million albums of solo material and with Montrose. Dave has sold 3.5, not including a platinum video because those are different certifications. I wouldn't say that Sammy blows Dave out of the water in this aspect.
C) Also according to the RIAA, Dave-era VH has a total of 35.5 million albums, including a Gold certificate for the "Jump" single, while Van Hagar has a total of 18 million. Sammy could be talking world-wide sales, but those are always lesser than the American totals, unless you're Mr. Big. Besides, I think Dave-era was more friendly world-wide than Van Hagar.
D) "Right Now" was never a #1 record. In fact, it only reached #55 on the charts.
E) Dave didn't have a solo career before VH because he was a founding member, busy building the band up to where you took over. At the top.
F) The VH reunion of 2001 will rake in the bucks.
I like Sammy a lot, and I'm seeing him for the first time this Friday. But this interview just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

"We get to the hotel, there's people partyin' in the parking lot, people gettin' down in the elevator, wow! I swear to God I had this one chick, this chick was poundin' on my door, she was kickin' and screamin' at my door 'til about 6.30 this morning. Finally, I just said, 'Fuck it!' and let her out of my room!" - David Lee Roth

I dig Sammy and all, but before he presses his case further about his VH legend someone should read him some of his lame ass lyrics as far back as ou812...Dave may have forgotten the words in a drunken stupor, but once he sobered up he never had to sing 1-900-spanked!!

This is really bad. Those interviews are harsh coz it's more than four years after the facts. It's not a "heat of the moment" kind of thing. Apparently those wounds are so deep time doesn't heal them.
It's also really incomprehensible that Ed & Al have made business decisions that stupid. I mean they have accountants, advisors, friends. A band in their position (more than 50 million records sold) having to give to their manager a bigger share than the band members? That's crazy! This has to be the biggest swindle of rock, or what? And I've talked to Al, he's an intelligent man...
It hurts that this kind of stuff happens

It's after hearing shit like this that I throw on some Sammy-era VH and try to remember why I (still?) like him.
It's getting to be tough business...

I think Sam is getting tierd of being asked about VH. Deep inside Sam knows that this VH reuion with Dave is going to be HUGE and might take some of his VH fire away. He was always compared to Dave and this will make it worse.

Thanks for posting the real numbers EUX4life!!
I was just about to go look it up and post it here myself. Hell, the numbers are on van-halen.com too.
Dave had 3 platinum solo albums and sold out arena tours all over the world from when he left through 1989. Sammy's never sold out a stadium by himself!! Hell he could only sell 500 tickets to an outdoor amphitheater here on the Marching to Mars tour. And that was right after he left VH, so he should have been the most popular.
Sammy will always be in Dave's shadow. He knows it and hates it, but theres nothing he can do about it. Sammy's name will never be mentioned without someone thinking of DLR.
He took over in VH when they were at the top. Taken there by DLR and the rest of VH. And still managed to slowly run them into the ground. Only Ed's Brilliance and the rest of the band's chemistry kept them viable for as long as they were.
He's a punk!!!!!
