This is a really good site on Van Halen, has lots of cool stuff, but the reviews on the shows are, for the most part, pathetic. You people have to remember, David Lee of 2002 isnt David Lee from 1982, and Sammy is Sammy. I wish they were comin closer to me, because im a big DLR fan, and Sammy on the same bill? seeing this show is a no brainer. i saw DLR at Trump Marina , hell, i forget if it was 1999 or 2000. My wife ,who is no big VH fan at all, thinks DLR is a freak, got us FRONT ROW tix, on the right side. The Diamond one kicked ass that nite, anyone who was there please verify this...anyway, my wife left there sayin that was one of the best shows she ever saw, now is a DLR fan. Now thats an unbiased reveiw from someone with no prior knowledge of anything VH. I dont care what all the petty bulls*$! anyone writes about the Diamond one...we love u in NY Dave, youll pack em in with Sammy, come on down!!!
The problem with self-improvement is knowing when to quit...DLR

keep in mind that most critics listened to echo and the Bunny men....The worst review I have seen was from MTV, but they suck ass anyways.

SAMMY AND DAVE BOTH put on a good show. Although Roth was bombastic and kicked major ass!

"Kicked Ass" is a relatively subjective term to each observer...

There's no question of Dave's status as an entertainer in his own right and time.

But I think there's an element of significant consideration when reviewing Dave's current performance. This is 2002 not 1982. A young man dancing, prancing, jumping and kicking in flashy spandex isn't considered a popular entertainment element any more... Neither is a middle-aged man doing the same... actually it's pretty off-beat IMO.

For those of us who experienced DLR 78-84 in VH and his solo stuff. It was the top of the heap and none compared.

But for me this tour on Dave's side sounds like watching TV reruns from the 80's. The shows are still great... the clothes are geeky... the laughs are there but not gut busting anymore...

It's like saying Robin Williams is one of the greatest comedians of all time... but would you be enthusiatically running to cough up $60 a ticket to see him perform his hits dressed in flashy spandex from Mork and Mindy would ya??

Think about it...

Woke up this mornin, got Blue Moon in your eyes...

I think Robin William fans, who were fans of his Mork character, would shell out money to see him perform as Mork if the concert was billed as "Robin Williams as Mork" and they wanted to revisit the past.

DLR fans like the character of DLR, be it 2002 or 1984. He is what he is.

You can change with the time and evolve, but you might be successful at it. Look at VH-III.

Seriously, Ed tried something new and people hated it, but you can't fault him for trying. Successful bands are always going to be slaves of the music they've created because the become such icons of that age, so what are they going to do? Come out on stage in a suit like Eric Clapton all the time now? Personally, I get a kick out of Dave and hell if I looked as good as he does in spandex, I'd be flaunting it too. How can he sing Hot for Teacher, Panama or any of the other classics in a suit? C'mon! If he did that, people would bitch too.

And Sammy is Sammy, yes that's true, but there's something to be said for keeping yourself in shape and just doing the show without all the insults to a band that put his name back on the charts (say what you want but it's true) and hawking merchandise. Nobody likes it when Brittany does it, so what's the difference with Sammy?

And Robin Williams is not as funny as he used to be.
Could this be magic?

What do you want Dave to do? Come out with nose piercings and black fingernails?

Why no comments about Sammy and his Jams? Sam could be wearing parachute pants and you would think it is ok......

No I used the spandex comment as an example of the product of the 1982 era... simply he's dressing, performing and only doing material from 78-84 (Yankee Rose excluded).

What I'd expect is Dave to do his VH material, some of his solo material and some of his new material that was actually produced and sold albums in recent times... oh yeah there isn't any... oh well. I don't care really how Dave dresses... more interested in his overall set content and not a re-run of 78-84. I've already been there... done that and all the t-shirts have long since worn out....

I'm not a big Sammy fan so what I posted wasn't to imply Sam's got a better deal going. At least Sam is performing a full range of Montrose, Solo, VH, and recent solo material. Which in my opinion is a more comprehensive presentation for span of the artists career.

I do prefer the hawaiian shirts... but I grew up on a surf board in Santa Cruz, Ca... and spent a lot of time in the islands as well..so that's just a cultural thing.

unless something changed since opening night, Sam's not playing any Montrose, and nothing from Ten Thirteen. this was almost the same Hagar set i saw in 1997, except for Mas Tequila. so the reports saying how tight Sam's band are partially correct, since they've been playing the same set for the last five years. it's hard to fuck up a part when you've done it that many times, over and over again...

Right... I stand corrected. The Montrose Sammy did was w/ the Metalica knuckleheads just before this S&D tour kicked off.

Yes he is kicking ass, but the asses he is kicking are a lot bigger than they used to be...man the woman from the 80's are FAT!
Anyways, he is rocking, but he needs the boys of VH to go on...after this tour, if DLR or VH decide do anything on the road: They need to do it together. Beginning of another story.
Just go for it!

I think it's important to realize that Dave actually IS trying to be 1982 Dave. That's what he wants to be for this tour and I'm fine with it. I'm sure some people think it's cheesy and played, but he still pulls it off pretty damn good for being 47. I mean, that outfit IS David Lee Roth. It's not like he walks down Rodeo Dr. looking for spandex! It's his costume. It's part of his aura. It's all part of the show. If you don't like it, that's cool, but it really is all just part of the act.
