...but I don't think Mikey alone would have been enough to keep Dave out. If anything, they would have recorded while Mike was off with Sammy, or just dusted off the ol' Rolodex and said, "Hey, Billy, ya busy?"

I think if anything, this would open up a return for Sammy. Remember, Sam was not to happy with anything related to VH management during the Balance album and tour up until he left/got fired. Eddie does a housecleaning, gets new management, new label ect. Mends fences w/ Sam. Who knows. Giving Mike his blessing is a step in that direction. Either VH is finished where he can't keep Mike on a leash or there is something in the works w/Sam, or maybe even Dave(doubt it).
The bottom line is speculation is useless at this point. Who knows what goes on up there in Wallyworld. I am a pro Dave-era fan, but I would take Sammy back at this point. If Mike can help turn this "side project" into a possible Van Hagar reunion, good. Better than a 4th singer and better than nothing.
