Interview
The interesting part:
Moving on again…As far as the recording of some of these actual releases go…How about the practice of having bands/artists substituted in the studio
This happens a lot more than people think.
Sometimes it's to get that "one perfect" take. Other times your guitarist is too drunk or a no-show. Can you say Van Halen? Some of the guitar work on the "Balance" album is really Steve Lukather! I probably shouldn't be telling you this! Sometimes, your guitarist just can't seem to do what you want. Can you say Creed? Nickleback? Can't do that guitar part? We'll bring someone in who can.
This revelation will probably piss a few people off, Andrew! I can hear and smell the shit hitting the fan already!
Most of these appearances by others go uncredited. You think Creed wants to admit they brought someone in to do leads?
Some bands have entire albums packed with work done by other drummers, bassists, guitarists, whoever and whatever. It's so common in the business that it's really not a big deal.
Most fans have no clue that this happens though.

This is great news! Just bring in the replacement if Eddie is having problems and we will have some new VH in no time!
Everytime VH's name is mentioned it is something negative, stupid or greedy. Has a bands reputation ever been worse?

WOW!!
I find that very hard to believe. I think Eddie allowing somebody to play his guitar parts on an album would be like Dave letting Sammy sing a duet of "Everybody Wants Some" and letting Sammy say the "I like the way the line runs up the back of her stocking" line.
I could be wrong, though, but I doubt it.You can lead a horse to water, but that still won't make him a duck!

I don't think Ed would ever admit to it being true (if he even remembers), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. As far as the slander thing goes, if the story is true I'm sure there are lots of people that can testify to it like Erwin Musper, record execs and even the rest of the band.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought it was pretty common knowledge that Lukather had performed some of the guitar tracks on "Balance."

Do you guys think this could have really happened?

I think it could be possible? The only case for Eddie that I actually know of where he didn't
play a guitar part himself was on the "Best Of" album on the track "Can't
Get This Stuff No More". The part of the song that has the "Talk Box" was
done by Eddie's guitar tech Mike Keegan . Aparently Eddie's mouth was too small to get
around the mouth piece to make the sounds corectly?
Do any of you know of other songs or parts of songs not played by Eddie? If you can't do it in a white t-shirt and a pair of jeans under one lightbulb, you can't do it!

i didn't even get all the way through it, but this is my favorite part so far:
"What most label people don't tell you is how they're the ones making the money. The artists are in all reality short-changed most of the time. While the label and the execs are swimming in cash, the artists often see little in the way of real net dollars on album sales."
so remember that next time you hear some RIAA yutz bitching about file-sharing..."is this a good show tonight, or fuckin' what?" - DLR, Montreal, 11/10/07

Keith? No doubt.
This may have been a one time performance, a tour or many tours or complete bullshit.
Anyone ever hear this? Again, can't remember the source, maybe a complete rumor but it did originate from this guys obituary.

I don't post very often, but I just had to chime in on this.
It is possible that Lukather could have played a few notes here or there, but I can guaranfuckingtee you that 99% of that album is Edward Van Halen!!!
I've been playing guitar too long and listening to Ed too long, I know how he plays. All of the nuances of both his rythm and lead playing, there is no way anybody is going to duplicate that!!!!
Bullshit

I'm sure i've heard some of his Christmas songs over the years - either on "Dr. Demento" or maybe 98 rock out of Baltimore. Some good ones - Christmas or otherwise - for sure
