My personal opinion is that James Hetfield and Tom Morello shouldn't have even been included, but that's just me. And, SRV should've been listed in a higher position.
Cut n' pasted from Yahoo! News:
Hendrix Named Greatest Guitarist
Tue Aug 6, 9:41 AM ET
LONDON (AP) - Psychedelic guitarist Jimi Hendrix has been voted the instrument's greatest player in a poll conducted by Total Guitar magazine.
Hendrix, who died in 1970 at the age of 27, beat Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page to the top spot in the poll of the magazine's readers.
Hendrix made his name in the late 1960s, with classics like "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe" and "Voodoo Chile."
Blues veteran Eric Clapton came in third, followed by Slash from Guns N' Roses and Brian May of Queen.
Younger talents also made the top 100, including Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead at 35 and Noel Gallagher from Oasis at 50.
Johnny Ramone of The Ramones — who built a long career on rudimentary three-chord rock — was 88th.
"What's nice about it is that it's not some music critic's opinion of the best guitarists — these guys might not be `cool' by any music critic's viewpoint, but they genuinely are the fastest, loudest, most exciting players in rock 'n' roll," said the magazine's editor, Scott Rowley.
No woman made the top 100. Only one — Tracy Chapman — was among 440 guitarists nominated by the magazine.
"Personally I don't know if it's a bad thing," Rowley said. "Women just aren't as geeky or competitive about it as guys. Instead of showing off, they're trying to write a good song. Which is probably smarter."

I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."

Cobain is a great guitar player? Please!
Now songwriter and artist, he's ok... he was a visionary, I'll give you that; But a guitar player he was not.Your favorite band sucks.

I can't really argue too much with the other picks above Ed. While I would personally put Ed #1, I can understand how influential the other guitarists are and why they made the top of the list.

Umm... what the hell is the criteria here? That is an odd mixture. To have Satch that high as a soloist makes me go "hmm..." when I ponder how they picked these guys.
And... to have Zakk(Ozzy guitarist) and not Randy(Ozzy guitarist) just makes this this list fucking garbage!!!
Plus, Hetfield??? He is a great rhythme player but then why isn't IOMMI up there? This list sucks ass!!!

I guess you could make a technical argument in favor of Satch, but....nahhh.
I've always personally held EVH #1, but to be realistic, I always put him at #3, behind Clapton and Hendrix, with Page and Beck rounding out the top 5. Now, to think of it, I'd say SRV has got to be up there too, but I don't know enough about the guitar to say who is where. I'll leave it as a top 3, with EVH, Clapton, and Hendrix, any order you'd like.

Hendrix, Clapton, Page ,Beck, SRV, Van Halen, in any arguable order. END OR STORY.
Nobody else should even come close. What a joke. You can lead a horse to water, but that still won't make him a duck!

Cobain has no place on that list. I knew guys in high school that could play better than him.
Slash has no place on that list, at least not in the top 50.
Brian May? I like him, but who has he influenced?
Tom Morello? Please.
Gary Moore?
Where is Randy Rhoads?
Just another popularity poll, it seems.I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em. -

I only have a couple of comments about the list. First, Slash over Eddie??? No way. Even though Slash is very talented, he never changed the face of guitar playing. Second, Kurt Cobain is WAY, WAY, to high on the list. He has always been very overrated in my opinion.

i have a theory that most people who actually vote in things like this aren't the most musically educated people. most of them tend to be die hard fans of a group who listen to next to no other bands and therefore just vote for the guitarist in their favourite band. sorry for that long sentence
