With all the talk about Eddie's and Nirvana's first meeting, I wanted to bring up VH's first meeting with Aerosmith back in 1978.
VH opened shows for Aero in 78' when they were just startin' out and I have heard how Eddie VH ran into Joe Perry backstage and went up to him all excited & telling him how much he loves Aerosmith.. And Joe just kinda sneered at him, turned his back and walked away without saying a word!!
Is this true? Cuz I have heard this story many times. I can believe it cuz by all acounts I heard VH was handin' Aerosmith their ass every nite(although I am sure Aero would conveniently blame it on drugs).
Poor Joe musta been bitter- his own band was in turmoil, an unknown young VH was ripping them to shreds every damn nite, VH was an instant phenomena while it took Aero 3 albums to make a dent and he has to follow a young 22 year old guitar slingin' GENIUS on stage every nite.. No wonder they where so stressed.. hehe ..
Anyhow, here is a funny Joe Perry quote from a guitar mag..
"Back in 1979 Van Halen came out and started taking the lid off guitar playing again. It was great and I really liked it, but it was a little hard. That was right when Aerosmith was starting to wind down and then we left this great gaping hole for the West Coast thing and Van Halen. I would never have admitted it back then, but I think they were a great band and I think they are a great band." - Joe Perry
Um, Joe dear, VH got signed in 1977 and debuted in 78', double platinum and top 20 buddy, ok?
Not 1979.
And to think Aero had anything to do with VH's success by insinuating that Aero's supposed decline left a hole for VH? Boy, I dont know wether to laugh or make him eat chowda.. arrogant loser... Get that prick some smack, stat..

The account of Joe turning his back on Ed is true, but they both were much friendlier and had better things to say about each other later on.
I can see where you think Perry's comments were cocky and presumptious, but the truth is that Aerosmith really were the hard rock kings during the late 70's and their fall coincided with VH's rise after their first album and world tour, which did put things around '79. There certainly was a correlation, although Aerosmith didn't do any thing to "open the door" for VH except for falling off the face of the earth at the time (), which left very little competition for a hard rock band like VH at the time.

But I dont think Aero had a goddamn thing to do with VH's success. In fact, Aero never disappeared and never stopped being a band. That is such a myth. Perry left in 79' but not due to exhaustion or whatever, due to EGO. He hated Steven. If Perry was so tired and drugged out how was he able to immediately form the Joe Perry Project, release several albums and tour as well?
Aero continued on with a new guitar player from then till like 84' when Joe came back. They never stopped recording and touring from 79' till 84'..
I think Perry and the Aero boys love to make it look as if they just fell off the earth in 79' and that allowed VH, or any other band, to succeed. When in fact nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I like to believe VH put a few nails in Aero's coffin for that time. Aero was still very much a force, a huge concert draw and a huge band when VH came out in 78'.
In 78' and 79' Aerosmith where still HUGE, period. And do they think they where the only rock band around or something? I guess they forgot Kiss, Led Zepellin, Queen, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, Thin Lizzy, The Who, Rush, AC/DC, Judas Priest, The Stones, Cheap Trick, The Scorpions, Deep Purple, Journey and many others where all out there at that same time battling it out in the late 70's!! Not to mention The Ramones, the Pistols, The Clash and the whole punk rock thing of that time as well... Even during Aero's 'supposed' comeback VH continued releasing no. 1 multi-platinum albums and packin' arenas.. Jeesh, Aerosmith are starting to believe their own bullshit fairytale...

I think that quote was actually directed towards Jimmy Page, not Joe Perry. It was in his first major Guitar interview, he did slag on Joe Perry though, and Ted Nugent.
He actually started a pretty big stir with that interview, but most of what he said was true, you could find it on the net somewhare, it's a pretty popular interview, and it's a good read.

VH played a shitload of Aerosmith tunes back in their club days. Sets were literally peppered with three or four tunes from Aerosmith...

That is a true story about Joe turning his back on Ed. Also, his "Joe Perry Project" was shit. I've heard alot of stories that he was continually booed off the stage when he was touring. He & Steven were in pretty bad shape back then.
Then they got back together, after getting off the shit (supposedly.)
I don't think there's anymore bad blood though. Perry knows better than to ever try to compete w/ Ed's accomplishments.WHAT IS UNDERSTOOD NEED NOT BE DISCUSSED!

A friend of mine a while back asked me about why Joe Perry did that to Ed and although I didn't know my reply was, I am not sure but something tells me Ed said something somewhere to piss the guy off. I truly feel for Aerosmith. Those poor bastards. Even Neil Zlozower has stated VH was brutal and just killin' people back in 78'.
VH where just starting out, fresh and hungry on their first tour, going out there with somethin' to prove. EVH was unleashing his wizadry on the world for the first time. Poor Aerosmith didnt stand a chance in hell in my honest opinion. They coulda been on steroids, eating their vegetables and takin' Flinstone vitamins and they still wouldnt stand a chance in hell against that tornado of sound comin' outta Pasadena..
If Aerosmith's drug and stress problems werent bad before 78', they sure musta gotten bad after seeing what VH was doin'. I mean, VH came out the gate with instant success. A double platinum debut album(that went on to sell over 10 MILLION copies and become an instant classic) and cracking the Top 20 on the charts. While EVH instantly swept up every guitar award under the sun and Diamond Dave become THE Rock God.
Compared to Aero, who needed 3 albums to finally score platinum and have big chart success, and who even as early as their 2nd album was already using hired guitar slingers to play on their albums...

Joe Perry is good, yes. But, I'll put Brad Whitford up against him any day of the week. He is truly an underrated, and underused, guitarist...especially in Aerosmith. I've seen Aerosmith live quite a few times now, most recently this past Tuesday night at Coor's Amphitheater, and each time I see them you can see the obvious difference in Brad and Joe's playing. Brad plays with definite passion and soul, while Joe is all about "look at me, look at me!".
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."
"This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."
"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

I'll say this, and I'll defend it to the death, Joe Perry is a hack.
