balance has its moments

but 5150 - apart from title track - sux

I didn't dislike the SH years, but I can't get past the power ballad crap. It ruins it for me.

Overall sound wise, I think you have to go with 5150 as the Sammy album most comparable to Dave's, but quality wise, I've gotta go with FUCK. It's a shame Balance didn't have more actual tracks on it, but if it were a full album it'd definitely get the nod. I loved the darker than usual edge to it.

VH and 1984 are Van Halen's best albums. However the Sammy era albums are at least as good as the other four Dave era albums.

I really liked OU812 Cabo Wabo,AFU,Mine all Mine,Black and Blue,Sucker in a 3 piece were all good songs IMO.And When it's love was very good also so fukk all you mother fukkers.

If you ask me Diver Down is the absolute worst record Van Halen ever made,half the pile of shit is someone else's music and the only decent VH song on the album is Little Guitars,which by the way is actually a "power ballad"if ever there was one.And while I'm on the subject of "power ballads"that supposedly werent on the first six records what was little dreamer,in a simple ryhme,push comes to shove,i'll wait?All power ballads for sure and not all bad songs,in fact all but i'll wait were really good songs

FUCK and Balance especially were both great records. I'd put Balance just a notch below Van Halen's best stuff with Dave, and to be fair, what else really does compare to classic era VH at their best?

Also, for those who think the band never did a "power ballad" with Dave, I suppose I should remind you of songs like "Secrets", "Push Comes to Shove", "Big Bad Bill", as well as keyboard-driven songs like "Jump" and "I'll Wait". These are all still GREAT songs, but using the Rothophile definition of anything not being balls-to-the-wall wailin' as a "power ballad", these songs all qualify easily, and some others could come awfully close.

SBS
