Did Yngwie Malmsteen turn down an offer to join DLR's band in 86'?

I went to the music store today to pick up a couple packs of strings and i had my VH shirt on and when i got to the counter the guy goes "hey its a fellow Van Halen fan" and he asks if i think Dave is back and i say i say i hope so..ANYWAY....we get to talking VH and he said that Yngwie Malmsteen was offered the guitar job before Vai was 86' but turend it down. I have not heard anything about this before. So i have to ask if anyone here knows if this is true or not?

I haven't ever heard that, but I seem to remember Yngwie saying that he turned down David Coverdale back around that time (Still of the Night era).

It's entirely possible though that Yngwie was considered for DLR cuz Dave knew that EVH would be hard to replace and at the time Yngwie was the "next big thing" on guitar since well, Eddie himself.

I've never heard this one. You'd think that this would have come up before in articles, interviews etc. Who knows? I doubt it though. Out.

Ok thanks, just thought that if it were true then someone here would know. What probably happened is that he got the David Coverdale thing that Steven B was talking about confused with David Lee Roth.

Not really related, but if any Yngwie fans are in the house, he will be at Ziggy's in Winston Salem, NC later this month. I can probably get more concrete dates, etc. if anyone is interested.

Well, I was going to say no when I finally decided to tempt this thread. YM's to classical of a player I thought and wouldn't mesh that nicely with rock. I could be wrong though, I never have listened to the guy.

I definitely remember hearing this back when Dave went solo. Yngwie said no, and so Dave went out and got Vai.

    I've never heard that!

I do know that Whitesake's ex-guitar player John Sykes jammed with DLR a few times and was considered, but Billy Sheehan suggested Steve Vai, and Vai got the job.

It's funny that Vai played on the next Whitesnake album. It show's you how talented both DLR and Whitesnake were.

I think maybe the music store clerk may have been confused: Steve Vai replaced Yingwee in Alcatrazz in I believe 1984...then Vai hooked up with DLR. Vai has played with some of the greatest and most popular frontmen...Ozzy, DLR, Zappa, Coverdale.
He has also "left" each frontman on open terms, meaning he didn't leave on bad terms...invitation open to record/play together again....Steve Vai: What a nice little boy

Vai wrote one of the songs on Ozzmosis...Zakk Wylde ended up playing the parts though...Somewhere out there are the demos of Vai's music with Ozzy. Listen to track 8 "My Little Man"...very "Vai"
It's funny to me how Vai and Van Halen are "related" in so many ways. Ozzy played with Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge who played with Whitesnake/Vai. Vai was (of course) DLR's sidekick etc....

    [/B][/QUOTE]Ahh...is that all.
I thought he at least played guitar on a song when Brew Crew said he worked with him.

I'm a big Vai fan, I've read quite a bit about him. I know that his favorite bands growing up were Led Zeppelin and Alice Cooper.

Steve Vai along with his former teacher Joe Satriani played on a popular song by Alice Cooper called Feed My Frankedstein.

Vai was also asked to join Alice on his tour, but he declined because he was already signed to tour with Whitesnake.
