well, why not? they're not with warner bros. anymore, and are therefore free to have anyone they choose to be their singer. they seemed to enjoy working with gary; just seems like the label wasn't happy with the lineup.

It wasn't just that Warner Brothers wasn't happy with the lineup with Gary, the majority of the fans weren't either!
That's kind of important.
I would have liked to see another album with Gary though, I felt that it would have been better than VH III.Right Now you're reading my post!

What would be the difference between Gary and Singer Number #4?....
NOTHING.
Even Gary was humble enough to realize the fans would not accept anything else short of Dave or Sam.
Why does VH think number #4 would be any different?Van Halen R.I.P
(1974-1996)

I still don't understand why at this point, if Van Halen has no record contract, that they just don't throw us fans a bone in the form of a few unreleased tracks on their Web site. Jeez, something unreleased, something with Dave, something with Sammy, something from the second Gary record, or even just some live cuts from the vault. Heck, why not just put up a few of the "jams" Eddie and Alex have been doing lately.
ANYTHING!!! Especially since there is no record company to get their "panties in a wad" over them putting unreleased stuff for free on their Web site.
If they're not doing if for money, then put the entire second record with Gary up there for kicks!

Oh Lord, we're at it again.
Van Halen III sucked, but it wasn't Cherone's doing.
If David Lee Roth had sung on Van Halen III, the album would've sucked. It can't get any simpler than that.
"Yeah, but Me Wise Magic, DLR wouldn't have put out an album like III"
That might be true, but that really shouldn't be a part of this argument. Why? Because people always point a finger at Gary, his singing performance.
Take III's music, insert Roth's voice, and it still would've bombed.
Now listen to Gary's newest track, "Left For Dead". That's what we should have had on III."The day will come when it will sound better, but it will still be digital. To me, it just isn't musical. And when it comes to music, I'm the Unabomber of digital technology. I hate it." -Eddie Van Halen

I'll even take it one step further. Compare Cherone's Extreme days, to Sammy's work on 'Balance'.
Cherone's a far better singer than Sammy."The day will come when it will sound better, but it will still be digital. To me, it just isn't musical. And when it comes to music, I'm the Unabomber of digital technology. I hate it." -Eddie Van Halen

I don't completely blame Gary for VaHalen III. Just the part that sucked! And that is anything that didn't have to do with an Eddie guitar solo.
But Seriously....
I think Gary was just scared to death to tell Eddie something sucks....which Roth and Hagar never had a problem doing.
And watching Gary prance around on stage like a Faggot on fire didn't sit with Me either...But that's another story.
Why don't they just let Mike sing? He has a great voice! get another bass player and send Mike to weight watchers.....shave the raccoon on his face and put him out front.
I would like to see it. Vegetarian is Indian for Lousy Hunter.
Opinions are like Assholes everybody has one

Gary gets a bum rap. Gary walked into a can't win situation and anyone who can't see that is full of shit. Look at this board. For the most part, there are two factions. There's the Dave faction and the Sammy faction. For the most part those two don't agree on anything. For a new guy to jump in that mix is suicide no matter how talented he is. Fans didn't like III so they look at the most obvious change and blame it all on him. If Gary stayed in Van Halen I think we would have had a Gary faction after the next album.
I saw Extreme twice. The first time was when they opened for ZZ Top. ZZ's fans did not get them at all. I thought the performance was lacking. The second time was at the Palace in Hollywood and they fuckin rocked the dump. So you may have caught Gary on a bad night YR. If any of you have the "Live at the 10 Spot video, check out "Year to the Day' and tell me with a straight face he can't sing. If he would only work on his stage moves for god sake!!! The combining of arguably the two best hard rock bands ever would be fucking huge. And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

Here is why Van Halen is fucked no matter what.
A new album with any singer will do shit, and if it does well (if it is done with Sam) there will be a huge backlash from fans...here is why.
An album with any singer will not have mass appeal. Classic Rock Stations may play the initial new single, but any main stream stations where there is a much larger audience will totally ignore it, unless it is Sammy with a keyboard type cheese song, which, pisses off all the so called VH fans because it is 'cheese' and you get all the sellout bullshit.
Singer number 4 will of course just piss off the so called VH fans before it is even released anyway. Little airplay, few sales. Dave is just too immature and dated, would be a laughing stock and again airplay would be limited to classic rock stations, a very limited market where mass appeal is severely lacked.
Any notions of an album selling millions of copies is little more than a dream, even with Sammy. Dave could never cut it, he would never do the cheese ballads needed for an album to sell millions, plus he just can't sing those type of songs, doesn't have the voice.
It would be a bad idea to bring Gary back, and I don't think Gary would want to be put in that position again. Look what the so called VH fans did to him first time around. Why would he subject himself to that kind of vindictive abuse again?
In the end, fuck it, go for #4 and play the local summer festivals.Life is something that happens when your planning something else.

I agree with the Roth statement Zadian.
As much as I loved him in the "early days", there just doesn't seem to be a place for him in today's mainstream rock scene.
Is it is fault? partially, if he wasn't larger than life or at least try to act like he was. Then maybe he could fit in again with VH, but most will only see as a nostalgia act, just another band trying to cash in on the "reunion" trend.
But I disagree about future succes if Sammy comes back. For some reason he still has "IT".
He is in tune to today's lifestyles and trends.
I was listening to Balance this morning and I thought of "what if CREED did a cover of "Seventh Seal"? It would be pretty cool, IMO.
Add to the fact that its only been 7 years since they were on the charts, granted Dave had the 2 new songs on BEST OF. But they didn't and still don't get the airplay that songs from 5150 to Balance get.
Then add the fact that Sammy & Ed were very close buds, they lived very close to one another. And that Sammy said in the current issue of Metal Edge that he still "loves those guys" but is still "pissed at them" but not as pissed as he once was.
With Mike's diplomacy, I think the bridge between Eddie and Sammy will be repaired. Alex just goes along with whatever little brother wants.'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.
