Greetings,
What if 3 had been an EVH solo project. Would have most fans still disliked it? Or would have your expectations been different?

I have always thought of it as the Eddie Van Halen solo project. It sure would have been received differently if it would have been called something other than Van Halen.

Still would've sucked. Shit is shit, whether you call it Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen or Poison.

Eddie was asked after Balance, I think, about a solo gig, and he said he basically had a solo gig, he did all the music anyway. He pointed to Balucitherium (or something spelled in some way similar to that) and said that would be a solo album without lyrics, so why bother? I think he also got very pissed when the writer suggested he might benefit working with another drummer, threatened to end the interview immediately if the writer kept it up. The brothers are tight, that's for sure.
Didn't Rolling Stone compliment his "tobacco stained voice" in HMSI and say they hoped it was a prelude to an EVH album? All I could think of was Keith Richards singing.

Obviously the content wouldn't change by the name on the front, but there's no question that people bring their expectations to the table when they listen to something. III wasn't what people expected to hear under the Van Halen name.
I definitely think putting it out under EVH's full name would have made people quicker to forgive him for it. I don't quite understand why III is used as something to hold over Eddie's head and make him feel ashamed. Even if you hate it, what artist didn't drop the ball at some point and put out something that missed the mark?
I like the album for, among other reasons, the simple fact that it's such a left hand turn from any of the other VH albums. I mean, it's still just rock and roll, but there's a vision there that isn't available in the rest of the catalogue. Doesn't make it my favorite by any stretch, but I don't need to hear another Fair Warning or another 5150.

Glenn, I agree. I may not like VH3 as much as the others, not even close, but I get a kick out of how different it was. I've hammered the mix on it and the singing style (screaming), but, on a relative basis, I reach for that before I reach for just about anything else. One aspect of Eddie that has gotten a bit denigrated was his lack of soul playing, his reliance on pyrotechnics. I never agreed, but this album shows some soul. I think all his "sober" work has started going that way.

I think it's ok that it was under "Van Halen." Afer all, when they changed singers the first time they kept it. Also Eddie, Alex, and Mike were still in the band (but Alex and Mike aren't heard very well on 3
).

Good question. Some of the songs I would call 'Van Halen' but there were a few that I would call 'Eddie Van Halen solo'. I don't need to mention them because we all know which ones they were.

Whattya mean "if" ??
It WAS a solo album!
It still would have been a piece of crap, no matter what name it was released under, but at least as an Eddie solo album, it wouldn't have trashed the name of "Van Halen" any further.Eat Us And Smile
Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

This is a good thread, Dog, you beat me to it.
I've got to disagree with FORD here (sorry, bud). I think that if III had been released as a Ed solo album many people would have praised him for stepping out and doing something different. Especially all of the music critics who've wasted no time in slagging off every VH album that comes out.
There was a definite maturity in III that would have appealed to stiff-necked music journos.
Now, does that make me a stiff-necked... hell no!
But I was pleased with III when it came out. I was as disappointed as anyone when the '96 reunion failed but when they went ahead with Gary, the last thing I wanted to hear was "1984" Part 2 or something similar. It was an opportunity for the band to try something different and they did (well, Eddie did. I'm sure Mike and Al must've turned up at 5150 on the odd occasion).
Bottom line, I like VHIII. Always have.
Any doubters should listen to it with fresh ears and without any preconceptions as to what a Van Halen record should sound like.Use my hand, I won't look!

This is exactly right. Unfortunately, simple minded people have pigeoned-holed VH as a party hard, guitar based rock n' roll band. We're not talking about an 80's band here. VH have always been a league above most other bands and if you listen closely, they've always stepped beyond that line of 4 on the floor rock into a realm of musical progression.
III just happened to be the epitome of difference. We heard odd sounds and timing on Fair Warning too...it's just that Dave kept to his schtick and people didn't notice as much.
I would have liked III whether it was called VH, Eddie, or sucky music. However, I do think that the majority of people would have accepted it more if it were called Eddie, for the simple fact that it's just too confusing for their wee little heads. People like to have a label for everything.

People would still hate or like the album as much as they do right now. Of course, the fact that it isn't a VH album would save us from the, "Dragging the name through the mud," comments.
