I been listening to this song all day. When you're making 31 minute albums why the hell would you leave a song this good off of an album? I love this tune..

No doubt! DIF should definitely not have the word "unreleased" in front of it.
"One of the reasons I left Sabbath was because Van Halen was blowing us off the stage every night. It was embarrassing." -Ozzy Osbourne
"When I first heard "Runnin' With The Devil" on the radio, I was stunned and found myself dizzy, walking through my high school hallways thinking, "What was THAT?!"
Eddie Van Halen was so innovative and kicked so much ass, and David Lee Roth was for a time indisputably the Greatest Man in America.
If aliens came down and challenged us to a Battle of the Bands to decide the fate of Planet Earth, I would feel very confident putting early Van Halen forward as our champion." -Tom Morello
"There is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne. Nobody takes that throne. Here's why it's different with Eddie: when a great guitar player passes, you just move on to another, right? But in this case, Eddie wasn't just a 'guitar player'. We're talking about a guy who changed culture and how we play guitar. He was like an alien coming in and fucking everything up so much that even the legends beforehand are like, 'Okay .. what is happening here? What sorcery is this?'" -Nuno Bettencourt

Wasn't DIF replaced from VH II with "You're No Good" (which is cover BTW)?
Me thinks that (DIF) would have fitted on any of the first 6 albums...I dig especially that kinda "mysterious"part in the middle of the song...

DIF is on my top 3 all-time favorite unreleased songs by them. It's funny how you can barely understand half the lyrics.

It depends on the source you're listening...
I have about 4-5 recordings, where this song is performed...none of them is fully understandable lyrically, but after listening all the versions you can fill up the blank spots...this is good example of Dave's live form...

It's true, most of the lyrics are barely understandable but I just flat out like DLR's voice. I don't really care what he's talking about - just as long as what he's "singing" and/or "saying" is melodic. Most of the time it is. Plus on the version I got, the guitar playing is so great that it makes up for the muffled and unintelligibe lyrics.

Maybe it's just me but Down In Flames doesn't seem that good. I haven't heard a very good copy of it though.

I love DOWN IN FLAMES. What a great song. It still amazes me that with all the short albums they released, they could have easily taken an afternoon and put a few of these down. I'll keep shouting out the names of songs like BIG TROUBLE, SHE'S THE WOMAN, GET THE SHOW ON THE ROAD and yes, DOWN IN FLAMES. There are two good albums worth of unreleased Dave-era VH songs. I love puttin' 'em on the stereo.

I've only heard a live version of it, but it didn't sound good to me. I'm glad that it was never released.

Word! Not just a great song, but a pimptastic moderator.
The intro kicks ass. Eddie should have saved it instead of wasting it on "You're No Good." I'm one of the few people around here who actually dig YNG, but I feel the volume effect suits DIF better, song-wise.
I can't exactly make out the lyrics, either. But the combo of seedy vibe (and potentiallyseedier) lyrics just made the song stick in my head. The chorus is melodic and catchy. Skyscraper's got a good point about the moodiness during the "solo." Mikey stands out, both with his bass and back up vocals. Why this song wasn't released is mystery to me, not to mention a damn shame.
Hmmmm... Seems Dan Halen and Yankee don't dig this song...
Don't make me bust heads in the UFF thread!

I can't really tell if it's a good song DIF, because the only copy I have of it is a live audience recording.
