Ok, I'll take a shot at this vs. stuff.
These are two of the most underrated songs from each era of Van Halen. I call this one a tie.
The solo at the end of OFOTD is one of Ed's best and Dave's story in the song is cool. Aftershock has another one of Ed's best solos since it's so full of emotion and Sammy's lyrics make this a good "fuck you" song.

One Foot Out the Door for sure. Aftershock is a good song, but not mind blowing by any stretch of the imagination. OFOTD is one of the cool forgotten songs in the VH catalogue.

Other than it having an eerie but cool intro, Aftershock isn't that good of a song IMHO. I regard it as filler material.
So I'll have to go with OFOTD by a light year. Dave's lyrics, Ed's solo (clearly one of his best), Al's drumming, the spooky way it segues out of SAITP; what more could ya ask for (other than it being two minutes longer )?Scott Roberts

I regard OFOTD as filler because it's only 1:56 in length. IMO Aftershock has it all--great lyrics, guitar, vocals. The best song on Balance."It's so damn hot... milk was a bad choice." --Ron Burgundy, Anchorman

Aftershock is exactly what I need when I'm in a "Fuck you" kinda mood. If you hear that blastin' from my stereo when I get home from work you KNOW not to fuck with me
It'll all end in beers...

I don't like the vocals in either song. OFOTD has a great solo, but then, so does Aftershock. I am basing my choice entirely on the instrumental aspects of each song, and in doing so, I have to go with Aftershock.
It has a very cool intro (played thru his original restored hotrod Marshall) a melodic solo break in the middle, and then in the outro, Eddie just cuts loose! I liked the direction Van Halen was going instrumentally for Balance, and the three new tunes on BOV1.

I'll keep this in mind the next time I listen to Eruption.
The intro and solo to Aftershock are cool, and even though the bridge didn't initially seem to fit the song, to me, I now think it does. (I'm sure Ed's pleased I've come around on this. )
Sam's lyrics are actually decent on this one. The only thing really holding the song back is the pace. It's too mid-tempo, IMO. When it picks up at Ed's solo at the end, at 4:32 (backed monstrously by Al), it's just too late. The song could have been better had it had a quicker pace from the outset.
As for One Foot Out The Door; this song smokes. Short as it is, it still rocks. The way it slithers out from under Sunday Afternoon In The Park, with Ed hauling ass on the synth... Wow. It's such a thick riff to begin with, but coupled by Mike's bass, it sounds that much heftier.
The lyrics are right to the point; I've got a little honey, can't get none since hubby's coming hom, gotta pimp roll the fuck out of here ASAP. LOL. And, the pace heightens the sentiment. Ed's soloing is warped. A great way to end the album.
You know what I think, after comparing the two songs? Sam's wife was cheating on him with Dave. Dave details his exploits in OFOTD, and Sam laments them in Aftershock.
(Ah yes, now onto the Dead Sea Scrolls... )
OFOTD trumps Aftershock.

Good point.
And the thing about SAITP and OFOTD...same with Not Enough and Strung Out. I hate both of the instrumentals, but love the songs.
