Ok people, I know this HAS to be the MOST hated song in all of VH-dom, BUT....
I am starting to really appreciate this song. (egads!!)
I mean, it's a really amazing song by a really amazing musician. I think that it has DEFINITELY gone over the head of most people. The composition of this song is really good. And considering it comes from a certified guitar GOD, this is an incredibly amazing feat.
I know that VH-3 is a sore spot in many people's eyes (especially DLR fans expecting 'THE REUNION'), but the album is (musically) incredible.
'How Many Say I' is no means a 'typical' VH song, and shouldn't be viewed as such. If it is, you will be let down, and probably already have. DO NOT listen to the song while you're speeding down the highway, getting drunk, or getting laid. Just sit down, put it on, and really LISTEN. Appreciate the man's musical genius, and you will get SO much more out of that song. Don't think of it as the alternative to the DLR reunion, but as a musical composition from our favorite guitarist/musician and I promise you'll be amazed.
Go on....give it another listen...I dare ya

There are several songs from VH3 that have grown on me:
Josephina
Year To The Day
Dirty Water Dog
It is true - VH3, in musical terms, is genius. It's just too eclectic for the majority of rock fans who are used to the Van Halen of old (any perhaps new?). I still do not care for HMSI, but hey, I won't knock anyone for liking it.

Especially don't listen to this song if you're doing all those things at once.
I love the song, it's the lyrics that I don't really connect with. But I admire Edward for putting it on the album, because it's so different from anything they've ever done and shows a whole different side to his art.
BTW, Year To the Day is far and away my favorite song off of VH III.

If Eddie could sing (he's really made for back-up vocals
) and the song weren't 82 minutes long, this one might have been great. But as it is, IMHO, it's pretty bad.
The lyrics are great, the chorus is all right, the piano is fantastic... but Ed's singing?
How many say, "I want Ed to stick to back-up vocals?"

That sounds like the phrase about having a perfect face for radio. "He's be a great singer if it wasn't for the fact that he's a lousy singer."
And 82 minutes long? You must be listening to the radio edit, the album version is much longer.

I like the song just fine, but It's an easy target for criticism , because hearing Ed sing just is so alien to everyone - doesn't really fit in with the VH sound. Besides, I don't think it's necessarily safe to say that vocal is entirely indicative of what Ed's lead vocal abilities sound like. It's just the only time we've ever heard him on record.
