This album will always have a special place in my heart because it's the one that got me into Van Halen in the first place. My first VH album (on LP) and I still have it even though I haven't owned a record player in probably ten years. I love the 1984 intro; I've heard people say that it sounds dated, but to me it sounds fresh every time. Then onto the songs. I've never gotten tired of hearing Jump; a new direction but still with all of the characters in their places. And Panama is a loud mouth friend that I never tire of. Top Jimmy has that cool stereo panning thing going on that I could never explain but if you've read this far you KNOW what I'm talking about. The guitar tone of Drop Dead Legs wraps itself around you with a warmth that you can only find in one other way. Hot For Teacher makes a young man want to grow up, and makes a grown man a kid again all at the same time. I'll Wait just shivers up the spine when it starts, and also contains one of my favorite Eddie Van Halen guitar solos. We got a taste of Girl Gone Bad at the US Festival, not that I knew that until about 15 years later. But the whole game is here and she went bad for a reason, cause this song is so damn good. And finally, House of Pain comes creeping out from the club days thanks to Alex giving it the nod. Wise man that Alex, because this is a fabulous way to end an album, and an era.

I havent listened to 1984 in a long time but after reading that post I had to break it out and listen to it once again. For some reason 1984 gets old real quick, is that jsut me?

Um ... Ed, it's called O-P-I-N-I-O-N. Nothing personal man, it just irks me when people try to shout down other people's OPINION with their own, stating it as a FACT. Everybody's got different tastes. I don't totally agree with Rafter's statement, but then again, I don't totally agree with yours. I personally don't HATE the album, but it's far from my favorite. Part of the reason for that is the fact that I just love a lot of other VH albums a lot more. I do like most of the songs on it though.

IMO 1984 is the best VH album although VH1 is a very close second and Fair Warning a very close third.

I'm tempted to move this to Opinions, but for the sake of discussion what exactly makes 1984 such a unique record in relation to the entire VH catalogue.

Is it the writing, the playing, the recording, the producing? How does 1984 command such an instant recognition among die hards, and casual fans alike? How long will that reign last? As long as "Abby Road," "Zeppelin IV," or "Paranoid"?
