Yesterday I saw a video snip of a VH live video from the Fair Warning tour. I can't tell you how happy this made me...the clip was shot in a dungeon like arena, St. Louis, someplace like that. 1981. Opening with Unchained. What else? All I could think was this was the best bar/backyard band ever. EVER. The four of them radiated such insane health...that was the craziest part, watching their energy, smiling and dancing in front of a huge wall of mismatched stacks. Too much.
Ed in his leather white nikes with red swoosh and striped socks pulled all the way up to the knee of his painter's pants. he's like the original Dexys Midnite Runner. VH all dressed like kids at a sleepover getting to wear exactly what they wanted....the most ludicrous outfits.

Being a second generation VH fan (I got the mojo from my old man when I was 14...that was 1981...)
I can get my dad's take on the show (he saw the '81 tour, he deemed me too young to go, da fucker...)he told me it was like what he always imagined a rock band to be like...a funny allman bros...a cool vegas show...

Hi Boopy baby.

That clip is from Oakland - there are also vids for So This Love and Hear About It Later. There is a rumored fourth unnamed clip from those shows as well.
If you'd like a copy along with some live vids and promos from the first three albums, shoot me an email, and I'll set ya up.

Given both the legendary status of Unchained and it's prominent placement near the start of many VH shows, it's interesting to remember that on the Fair Warning tour it was actually played very late in the setlist. That video makes it appear to be the show opener, but that's not the case. It was likely the first song of their encore.

Amazing video, a person could really hurt themselves diving for the remote to try and crank up the volume.

Given the video's ending,I would think this would be either the end of the regular set, or the last encore.

Someone out there actually AT the Oakland show?

Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

...It's the BAND and Dave is really the cat that can front VH. He sang his ASS off and was really cool. No cheese here guys, this is filet Mignon! - Steve Lukather's comment after witnessing a Van HALEN 2007 rehearsal

Huh...isn't that funny...with the flaming gong bit at the end of the song it makes sense that it was the encore...I assumed it was the opener...was Unchained used as an opener on Diver Down, then?

Romeo Delight was the opener on the DD tour, followed by Unchained.

I remember the video when it first came out on MTV (in the rocket/moon landing days). Martha Quinn would get positively giddy after it came on. I remember the huge stacks of amps and the flaming gong. Good times, good times...
