HERE IT IS, sorry for all the reviews, its something to share.. MY FAVORITE PART IS IN BOLD
Van Halen music is the type you blast out your car loud enough for everyone in the neighborhood to hear as you speed down the street. The kind of stuff you put on at a party to get the fun started. It's the band that every rock guitarist listens to in order to steal the new guitar tricks which Edward Van Halen has up his sleeve; his over-the-top style surely helped shape the way guitar players perform today, and he's regarded as one of the best ever. 5150 is Van Halen's most anticipated one to date-with Sammy Hagar replacing David Lee Roth at lead vocals, it marks a definite and important new chapter in Van Halen history. Hager's direction and vocal style lets the band get even more melodic, continuing the trend started with "Jump" and "I'll Wait" from 1984, something Diamond Dave perhaps objected to or maybe just couldn't handle-Hager's voice seems to fit better. The infectious single "Why Can't This Be Love" just refuses to leave your head, and will be one of those radio tunes which will be with us till Armageddon. "Dreams," or the ballad "Love Walks In," seem to be AOR favorites with their catchy keyboard runs and melodies. 5150 also has some excellent rockers more along the lines of their older stuff: try "Good Enough." "Get Up," "Summer Nights" and the title track for a more guitar-oriented sound. All this aside, I must admit I do long for their heavy rock days of yesteryear, but I'd bet my gold-plated VH neckpiece that 5150 will be just as successful.

5150 is such a neat album. I'll never forget the first time I heard "Why Can't This Be Love" on the radio. Those opening seconds of pressurized synth and you just know what's coming...when I heard Ed's bouncing riff I was like holy toledo the cat did it AGAIN. Reinvented a sound, reinvented himself.

Admittedly, when DLR left, Van Halen really became just that: Ed's thing. Ed's scene. Ed's band.
I can only tolerate Sammy Hagar when he was young and halfway hot and fronting Montrose. "Bad Motor Scooter" and "Rock Candy" are 2 of my favorite songs ever.
But as a singer for VH, to me--yeah Sam's energetic and his voice is engaging but gaaahhh...that band needs a sex symbol. DLR was, is, the ultimate sex symbol. Now, comes 5150, and Ed is the sexiest guy on stage. ED. DLR was the sexiest guy in the arena, every nite.
And I need a hot dog to go with my shake, if you dig.
BUT
BUT
5150 is great. That song "Get Up" satisfied the hell out of me, and at the time I was listening to a lot of speed metal at the time...and "Get Up" made even the hardest metalheads go nuts...
The ballads are sweet and still good for a slowdance/grope...
I saw this tour, way up in the nosebleeds at Worcester, MA...it was all about worshipping Ed, which was cool. Hell, Sammy spent the entire set praising Ed.
That record was the sound of the American summer, 1986. The last great clash of the titans--"Yankee Rose" and the Eat 'Em tour versus "Why Can't this be love" and the 5150 tour. Those were great times to be a rocker.

Balance is my favorite Sammy era album but 5150 comes very close. Summer Nights and the title track are some of my all-time favorites. Also the LWAN video rules.

I was at the Centrum myself for that tour BB! I was third row center and was throwing pennies at Sam leading the "we want Dave" chant (very embarassing in hindsight). They were fucking phenomenal! Good Enough rocks but I was always a fan of the title track. Ed got a great sound on that one. Great tour!
