I've been trying to figure out what it is so magical about HAIL. Part of it is definitely the gentle, almost lullaby beginning that flies upward on Dave's shriek, Alex's bass drum heartbeat and Eddie's ethereal wail. Then there are the words: Ain't got no money, got no house on the hill. Tell me, honey, will your loving pay my bills? The infectious chorus reinforces the song's themes of independence, responsibility, reality. Ed plays his solo as if the guitar is chattering and scolding, warning the listener to buck up and shut up. Finally, I love the raw, saw-like echo of Ed's guitar throughout. Have I gone overboard here? I LOVE THIS SONG!

You're absotutely right! The cooler thing is the fact it was written on piano. Killer tune.

This is one of my favorite VH songs too. From the first time I heard Fair Warning I liked this song. I gotta live version from '81 that's really good - the solo on the live version is actually better than the one on the album. Other than that, everything in this song is good. Good thing he didn't play this one on piano and used a guitar!

Great song and a great post, lawchick. I like your line about about Ed's guitar chattering and scolding. I know exactly what you mean and couldn't have phrased it better. Nice!
I love this song live.
