I loved Vh with Roth in the 80's for the live show but with Sammy VH became something new. Every album was better than the last and I believe they were on their way to becoming the next Led Zepplin. I have Vh III with Gary but I turn it off after 3 songs. The stuff with Sammy is VH at their best from a song writers view!

I agree!!! VH was at their best with Sammy, I also think that the songwriting was better with Sam. I think they were better than Led Zeppelin!

I like VH's songwriting with Sammy better. The Dave era was mostly about partying and having fun, which is good, but I think the Sammy era was more complicated.

I agree would have been nice to see follow up after BALLANCE.I guess all those number one records sold out shows were not enough to keep them happy and now look at them

I guess I like the Roth era so much more because there's a spirit in that music that is more unique. I feel the Sammy era kept repeating their game a lot and sounded a bit like a lot of other bands. I also think the man's lyrics were juvenile while Roth had a really unique style and performance. They were simply the most exciting band on stage with him.
Anyway, still great to have you on board, man. You'll like it here."I had a girl beating on my hotel door all night...She was screaming, crying. Finally, I said, 'What the hell'...and I let her out!"- DLR

I got into VH when Sam was in the band, in '87. I think Sam's voice is better but I prefer DLR-VH. Van Hagar (I usually hate using that term) made some great albums but Van Halen's first 6 all have that X-factor that make them special. I firmly believe that if Dave hadn't f**ked up and left the band in '85 they'd be where U2, REM etc are now - huge worldwide. Damn you, Dave, for breaking it up. I describe the first 6 albums as raw, energy. With Sammy, Eddie concentrated more on the song writing since he had a singer with more range. With Gary, it seems that Ed tried to go deeper into the songwriting along with some expirmentation. As we all know, that didn't go as planned (in the fan's eyes). With the 2 new Dave songs off of BOV1, I thought it was a nice combination of songwriting and raw energy.
Van Halen in 2002? I guess we wait and see. I'd like to see them take the 'Me Wise Magic' sound and go even further.Remember the Heroes - 9/11/01

First of all, saying Van Halen when Hagar was in the band is better than Led ZeppElin is an absolute joke. You're telling me that the band who wrote "Why Can't This Be Love" is better than the band who wrote "Ten Years Gone" or "Misty Mountain Hop"? Please. Secondly, I know it's a tired argument but saying that the true Van Halen band makes Van Hagar seem almost laughable in comparison is always kinda fun to say. I guess if you measure greatness by over-production and bland, monotonous, commercialized song writing, then V Hagar is your act.

I prefer Roth, liked Sam just fine, and felt Gary just wasn't going to fit although I like him.
This one's taking the a short trip over to Opinions guys - better off there.
