I just listened to it yesterday. I believe it could be the only Van Halen song that unintentionally cracks me up. Especially the part when Eddie and Gary bah-wah the line, "Nah-vur say I luuv y-UU."

I heard the story about how Howard Stern played the song for David Lee Roth in studio on his show. If I saw that, I might piss in my pants. Roth said something like, "What? You want me to salute the sinking of the Titanic?"

It's like, what were they thinking?

Ironic is the line, "Did you ever know something to be true, and DENY IT!" (Which also gives me a hearty chuckle.) Interesting to see what Sam & Dave would say about that line.

yeah, that's a funny song, especially when you listen to it while watching the b/w evh pic with his fist and his mad-man look.

anyway, if "how many say..." made it on a VH record, why shouldn't the 3 newly recorded songs with DLR be on the next release?

if Van halen doesn't like these 3 songs, just put em on your homepage as a free give-away download!

i'll take these 3 songs, add'em with MWM and CGTSNM from the best of, + the instrumental Respect the wind = 6 songs

remember 1984 only had 9 songs too (incl. the instrumental 1984)

so there's only 3 songs missing for a classic Van Halen record!

i'd suggest
-an unreleased cover tune by classic VH, like sweet emotion/Aerosmith (at winmx i found that one)
- maybe this freaky "look at all the people here tonight" as a bonus-track (i know it's not that great, but anyway, as a filler?)
- add at least 3 remastered versions of live tunes with dave back from the 1984 world tour (they never released anything live with dlr, did they?)maybe even the EVH's solo, 14 minutes, from the Live at the San Diego Sports Arena (5-21-84)

and there u go:
a "brandnew" classic VH cd, with at least 9 songs with DLR, made by yourself for yourself.

Now, we only need a title, and some cover. For the cover, it can't be too difficult to beat that really cheap cover from "VH III"

i'd call it: anihilator

as for the cover? a band pic, the 4 of em together in one straightjacket (asylum)

cheers,
SToRM
dave, we'd like to go upstairs, the two of us, with you ...

I remember hearing that piece of shit when I listened to the album for the first time. I had heard the album premiere (and hadn't been impressed, but hadn't heard this song). By track 11, my face was white...I was saying out loud, "Oh my god...this is horrible." Then that song came on...I started cracking up. I thought I was going to die from laughing. I remember getting up, turning the song off halfway through and grabbing my FAIR WARNING CD and playing it loud to assure myself that I am not insane for being a Van Halen fan.

It's also funny hearing Ed tell the story of how quickly he came up with it and how beautiful it was when he and the ballerina decided to do a duet for the song. I can't wait to hear this one covered by Kenny Rogers and Barbara Streisand.

One last point, if Eddie is so proud of the song, why did he ask Stern to skip over that track and find one of the album's "rock" tracks? Stern wanted to say something when he heard this track, but was too polite to Eddie. I would have killed to hear Stern say, "Eddie this album sucks. What the hell? Why didn't you keep Dave?" And Gary spent the whole interview refusing to say anything or sing for the show. Eddie was in a bad mood and spent the entire interview playing with his effects box while the other two were almost completely silent. It was a joke.

If this band (with no social skills whatsoever) cannot hook up with Dave, then they should break up.

Thanks for the responses Rikk and Storm. That's some pretty funny shit. There's a reason that tune wasn't played at the album premiere!

The last song on an album is extremely important in my opinion. You want to be able to listen to the whole thing with the last song leaving you satisfied but want to listen to the album again. For example,

VH - On Fire
VH II - Beautiful Girls
WACF - In A Simple Rhyme
FW - One Foot Out The Door
DD - Happy Trails
1984 - House of Pain
5150 - Inside (not a great example)
OU812 - Sucker In A 3 Piece
FUCK - Top of the World
RHRN - see above
Balance - Feelin'
BOV1 - Me Wise Magic

Catch my drift. Not only do think 'How Many Say I' should NOT have been on the album but definitely not an album closer.

I'm not sure about Happy Trails or One Foot Out The Door, and I think Sucker in a 3 Piece sucks. Good music, most of the lyrics ok, stupid, stupid chorus (see: Amsterdam)

Can you believe that Rolling Stone actually said that this was a strong track? If I recall, they commented on his "tobacco stained voice", and hoped it was a prelude to an Eddie solo disc. I remember looking forward to hearing it, then cringing in embarassment when I did. I can listen to it now, and I baaah baaah my way through it, because, like the good sheep that I am, I like ALL things VH.

My last message to you, Bezek. Look man, this is a VH Forum where everybody has opinions. I am going to continue insulting VH3 because it is my God-given right. If a Sammy fan insults 1984, I will definitely counter their argument, but I will no longer sink down to the level of claiming they're not a fan or claiming that they are a "piece of shit." Live with it, Bezek. You have some unpopular opinions on this site. I don't hate you. I have nothing against you. I don't agree with you, but maybe behind your ridiculous e-mails, you're a nice guy with a good point of view. Who knows? Well, maybe I'm being too nice. But if you want me to stop insulting you, use a little more tact in some of your messages.

Peace and loud guitars!

Yeah, the last three tracks were Black And Blue, Sucker In A 3 Piece, and A Apolitical Blues.
