VH Album Sales
Dudes I was Just on the RIAA Website and they List VH as having only sold 50.5 million albums. I went to the VH site and my count comes closer to 56.5 Million. What gives? those extra 6 million moves them past George straight and whitney houston right on the heals of Metallica. And who the fuck Knew AC/DC sold so many albums? I guess 20 million of Back in Black will do that...
I heard somewhere that VH has sold 70 million albums...is that world wide?

at Cabo, Sammy had displayed a "50 million sales" award fro VH and that was given in 1995. Now add to that the 2M or so for BOV1 plus all the others sold a little bit more (plus 500K for TBOBW & 3) and you come up with the 56M the website lists, which I beleive is just US.
Perhaps over the years the counting has changed (soundscan, etc...) that the riaa only has a limited total, I dunno.

RIAA is just US sales. I have heard that they were around 70 a few years ago, so I am sure that they are above that now world wide.

I remember waaay back when VH played "Poundcake" on the MTV awards, when Arsenio Hall was introducing them, he said that they had sold over 70 million albums worldwide. And that was back in '91 or '92, so it was only up through the FUCK album.

50.5 million certified in the US. If that's current, then when (if?) BOBW is certified Platinum, they'll be at 51.50. Cool.
But, yeah, that list probably hasn't been updated. Your best bet is to search the Gold and Platinum Database for "Van Halen" and add it all up from there, keeping in mind that Platinum for a video is NOT one million units.

Album sales I guess don't mean much in terms of getting into the RRHOF. According to that other thread going about the RRHOF mutli million sales and sold out tours are not criteria. If that was the case we would see Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Spandau Ballet and others in. I just would love to be the Invisible Man at the meetings that go on to discuss who becomes inductees. I am certain the same bickering over what lead singers are better comes into play when they decide. I know alot of critics have viewed VH in the heavy metal/hair band categories. So I guess it doesn't matter what that committee thinks. They haven't inducted the Stooges, Kiss, Black Sabbath, etc. I can go on all day about other worthy candidates. The voting process sucks. Aerosmith and Queen were both passed over for their first year of elgibility. They both had their debut albums out in 1973 and were inducted in 2001. I guess the committe goes by the year you release your first tunes. Yet back on topic I bet total VH sales have to be over 80 or 90 million now.

The award on display at the Cabo Wabo Cantina is for 60 million in sales...seems as though a true current number is rather elusive!

But the roth albums have been released on record, tape, cd, and the sammy era have only been released on record tape and cd, so that's why the roth era out sells the sammy era.
Oh, hang on, this conversation hasn't gotten this far yet, l'll be back later.

Wow so you are saying Hagar and Roth have both been released on record, tape and cd.
Thanks for proving the point that QUALITY outsells SHIT!

From Guitar Legends Magazine: "After selling MORE THAN 70 million albums worldwide..." I'd say it might be around 75-80 million, if they had 70 million around 91.

I posted in an earlier thread that the only artists eligible for the RARHOF that have sold more albums than VH but aren't yet in, are Barbara Streisand and George Strait--neither of whom are rock artists. In other words, out of all the rock artists in history who debuted 25 years or more ago, VH has sold the most w/o being inducted.

Six of Van Halen's albums were either certified as Platinum (Best of Both Worlds) or re-certified as multiplatinum for more sales (VH II, Balance, OU812, 5150 and Best of Vol I). If you count these updated figures, VH's total U.S. sales should be in the ballpark of 56.6 million. And with both VH I and 1984 being such popular albums to the casual fan, they are probably near the 11 million sold mark each.
