I agree. It would be a mistake. The few amazing moments they had were luck...luck that Hagar didn't screw them up. There were plenty of other cuts that had good music and pathetic, pathetic vocals (SOURCE OF INFECTION, IN 'N' OUT, GOOD ENOUGH, etc.).

Anyway, it's all opinion. But I really don't want him back.

What the fuck??? So you guys are saying that you would rather hear NO more VH ever as opposed to having Sammy back in the band? Put down the bong.

Lets not foreget that Sammy also released some kick ass tunes with VH and that Dave had released some stinkers with VH.

I don't give a shit if I'm alone on this thought, but, right now the track record is ZERO new VH in 4 1/2 year - that's almost half a decade. I want Sammy back to hear some new stuff. Bring it on, give me a CD full of Human's Being, Poundcake, Don't Tell Me, Summer Nights..the list goest on.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

Uh, I said I don't want Sammy back. Would I rather no VH than Sammy back? I didn't really say that. But no, VH with Sammy doesn't really excite me. As for your list, HUMANS BEING and SUMMER NIGHTS are the only songs from that list I like. Plus, the lyrics and singing on SUMMER NIGHTS are just very, very bad for me. "What da ya say, fellas...I think this calls for a toast." Whatever. I've always felt a certain drop in lyrical quality occurred when Dave left. I'm not saying Dave's lyrics were intellectual, but they certainly had more swing...like good James Brown.

As for Dave stinkers, can you really name many that most VH fans wouldn't disagree with you on? I can maybe only name two or three (maybe DANCIN' IN THE STREETS...ummm...can't really think of any others).

Anyway, I think bringing Sammy back is artistic suicide. It's time to bring Dave back and get some tension, quality control and real creativity back in the band.

If that's not possible, I'm not saying that I don't want VH to exist. I'm just saying that I won't get that excited.

I actually am one of the people who believe that members in bands are not interchangeable. I mean, could people really picture a line-up of The Beatles without John, Paul, George and Ringo? How about Cream replacing either Clapton, Baker and Bruce? To me, Dave, Mike, Alex and Eddie were the original line-up of Van Halen. That was the line-up I loved and first heard. What happened afterwards was substitution, and a substitution I never accepted. I'm not saying other people shouldn't accept it. Hey, I don't really support Deep Purple with Rod Evans...I support Deep Purple with Ian Gillan, and Ian was the second singer. But the second line-up was the one that achieved success, not the first. Well, Van Halen achieved success with Dave. And it's not really fair of all these Sam fans to treat Dave-era fans like traitors or "Roth-bots" if we happen to be particular about which line-up we want.

Get over it.

Fair enough Rikk; then I think everyone hoping that DLR comes back is going to be hugely disappointed.

I'd love to see the guys do another round with Dave. I'm one of the people who had never seen VH tour with DLR - I think it would be amazing; and I love VH w/ DLR. But the facts appear pretty obvious to me:
- 1985 - broke up.
- 1996 failed reunion (and messy!)
- 1999 failed reunion.
and if the rumours are true, they tried again recently and that didn't work out.

Creative tension is good; tension to the point of not getting anything done ...you get my point.

My sense is that people are saying Dave or the grave; and any fan polled would say they want more music from VH.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

It seems to me that day Eddie tried to get sober(back in the Balance days) was the day he realized Sammy wasn't cutting it.

if Ed's drinkin' again, he might have cloudy vision and think Sammy rocks again

you Waboweeners better pray Eddie is drinking cuz that's the only way Sammy comes walkin' in.

At this point, I think they will both be back.

Like it or not Sam and Ed had a great friendship at one time, not to mention Sam and Mike. Sammy's voice is better now.

But I think they will crank out a few tunes with Roth, some with Sammy and make an album. Then tour with both of them. Ed is too much of a perfectionist to put up Dave's voice for an entire album. I think they will do their best to make everyone happy. That includes both Dave and Sammy fans.

No one can be completely happy, but hopefully everyone will be able to find something they like.
Better use it up before it gets old!

"Ed is too much of a perfectionist to put up Dave's voice for an entire album."

Where on earth does the idea that Dave has a bad voice come from??? His singing is great, and it's totally original.

That's what was great about Van Halen that a lot Eddie fans try to dismsiss.

Look back at hard rock in the 1970s where groups like Boston ruled. Roth came along with a non-high-pitched-screaming sound and grounded hard rock back into the realm of a tough fighting sound.

And try to sing some of his parts if you think he doesn't have any technique. It's far harder to sing like Dave than Sammy.

A million guys can do Sammy's style (Gary Cherone matching his every note) but somehow no one can do Dave.

Why is that?

Because Dave's style was original - all his own - just like Van Halens guitar work. That's what made Van Halen so good, two major talents in one great group.

When they dropped Sammy in there, they became the Boston of the late Eighties and Nineties.

But the songs weren't as good as Boston's.
