Okay, i need to vent... i MAY have posted this a real long time ago, so if i did, i'm sorry... there's this guy i know who i used to work with who says he went to see Night Ranger play, and the keyboard player played a bit from a van halen tune (he couldnt remember which) and then went on to say that he recorded most of van halen's keyboard music in the studio... i thought it was bullshit from the start, but now this guy i know is claiming that most bands, once they get big, hire studio musicians to do all the music, while the band sits back on their ass and does nothing... now i'm not saying that doesnt happen... i'm sure that does happen... but he also claims van halen does it... we just got into it a bit on the IM and he gets me worked up everytime and it pisses me off, because HE is the one who has the damn burden of proof, not me... he's the one claiming that van halen doesnt record their own music, not me... and yet his argument is that I also can't prove that they DO indeed record their music.... is this true?? is it true that when van halen goes into 5150 that they don't play their own instruments; they have hired musicians to do it??!?!? is van halen currently sitting on their ass playing video games while other people are playing the guitar, drums, etc?!?!? please don't tell me this is true because if it is then that will kill a lot of my respect i have for van halen!! and i really don't want to do that... what do yaw think?!?!?!?

On most points, your friend is full of shit. However, the rumor I heard was that the keys player from NR was on the Carnal Knowledge tour and played backstage for the keys oriented songs. On the 3 tour, the keys were sequenced, but I don't see any reason to think EVH wouldn't have laid those tracks himself. Of course, someone more knowledgable should speak to this topic...

Fitz (from NR) played live keys backstage on the Balance tour. John Jessel played live keys backstage on the 3 tour.

In the studio, it's all Ed - except "Neworld" which was Mike Post on piano.

I wouldn't consider Van Halen a "semi-big band". Words like "huge", "legendary", and
"inspirational" always come to mind. I think this guy is full of it.

Deputy Van Halen I'm surprised you could even understand your friend, for it is obvious that he has his head squarely up his ass.

They don't play their music in the studio? No shit!, well it makes sense to me but if *I* want to vent I would also say that VH don't play their music in the studio.

Btw, they would technically have to listen to their music if they were in recording atmoshpere so' to speak.

So I'm already lost in this post because of one to many hits from the bong n' shit, I was fucked to begin with but had to post to vent n' shit. Oh yah, in a "relaxed atmosphre" I would definitly think they don't play their music. I wonder what they do listen to? Damn a new thread? lol ... Let me see?

It's not so much the talent or level of playing ability that we need to listen to in regards to all this. It's the style. Both the brothers have a unique style and a unique tone on thier main instruments. You could bring in the greatest seesion players on earth and they would not be able to recreate that sound. The keys? I don't necessarily hear anything unique in Edward's playing, no offense intended. I took my wife to see a very accomplished pianist last night, Jim Brickman, and I would say the same thing about him. So who knows about the keys. Michael Anthony? I thought he actually had a certain identifiable style and tone on the first six records, but I don't think he's done much in that area since, so maybe the rumor that EVH occassionally does some of the bass is true. It is far rarer in this day and age for a musician to agree to play on a record without being credited, although for contractual reasons, it still happens.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I always know when I hear EVH on guitar or AVH on drums, and although my ears are not faultless, I don't think I can be fooled with these two players.

The VHE says that Eddie recorded them and then rerecorded them every few days. I think I'd believe the VHE over some rumor.

I often thought that VH used recorded backing vocals on some live tunes. Nothing comes to mind right now, but there were a few tunes that sounded to lush for just 4 guys.

As far as in the studio, VH using hired musicians, please........
