I have both a home stereo component burner and a HP CD-Writer Plus.. Lately, the HP has started to "reject" certain CD-R's.. namely Maxell.. it won't copy, says there's a buffer problem, or freezes up.

My question.. do these things wear-out??? I've burned probably 100 and I would hate to go through the hassle of getting it fixed ALREADY.. it's under warranty.

Jerel.. is this why you said "Buy the friggin' warranty!"?

    burners wear out man...seriously.

I have a HP now...not by choice. I bought one 2 some years ago and have gone thru 3-4 burners under warranty. HP sucks.

Some latest 15. years. Others lasted 30 days. Buy the warranty folks.

Have you done all of the basic stuff like cleaning the laser lens and downloading the latest drivers?

Funny actually. I have an HP M820. I've been on the phone for 3 fucking days trying to get it to work on my new laptop. It doesnt recognize it for some very unknown reason. They thought it was that it was sharing IRQ #'s with something esle, so I changed them. Still nothing. Getting back on the phone now.

New drivers a worth a try.. it couldn't hurt. But, it's odd that everything was working fine up until recently.

Are you copying directly from CD to CD? Or, are you first making an image to your HD and then burning it? I suggest doing the latter. Make sure you have plenty of free room on your HD.

You may even want to make sure that your burner is set as the master on the EIDE controller. I've read it's more stable than having it set as a slave.
