Everyone has heard Van Rothin's amazing cover of this Eddie Cochrane classic, right? After Dave sings his little finale ditty, the band would do a little Iron Man and then jam out for awhile. Does anyone know what other song they were riffin' on? I'm thinking it was Sabbath's,"Children of the Grave," or "Symptom of the Universe."

I watched the Black Sabbath story Part 1 '70-'78 this weekend--whoa twas very cool.

Actually the version VH did was based off of The Who's version, not Eddie Cochrane's.

I love the Eddie Cochran(e?) original and the Who version--I understand Led Zeppelin covered this tune once or twice early in their career(that'd be cool to get a hold o' that!). T-Rex did a cool acoustic version of it.

I am interested in the little jam finale, like from Paris,France 5-10-78,and what tune they were referencing.

I may not know what the hell I'm talkin' about! I'm all juiced up,thinkin' I discovered another song reference or a new element but after hearing Sabbath's"Iron Man," on the radio, maybe Van Halen was just playing one of the faster parts or sections from the tune. Instead of goin' into another tune. Am I making any sense at all?

Anyway, the outtro or finale jam to Summertime Blues by Van Halen is always too cool! "...come on and boogie with us..."--DLR

    hey Loons,

I've been trying to work that out for a while too. I'm pretty sure it's not Sabbath, I have everything official and about 70 boots by them. I'm thinking it might be from the live version of Zep's Dazed and Confused but I don't have that anymore to check. It's definitely something I know but I can't quite
place it. I don't have the Paris show but I don't remember any Sabbath in the 76 or 83 versions which are pretty much the same.

Damn, it is Sabbath - I never put the two together until now. The first part of the Summertime Blues Jam is the same as the solo from 'Symptom of the Universe' - after that it's not clear to me. I think they're just jamming.

    So,it's:
    Summertime Blues(Dave finale...aint no...)
    Iron Man riff
    Symptom of the Universe jam
    unknown jam

hmm...not Iron Man on the versions I have though it is a similar riff at the end of ST and before the solo. I listened to GoldenWest '76 (Club Days) - most of the solo/jam is loosely based on 'Symptom' though Eddie is basically doing his own thing and just using a rough guide. The powerchord thing at the end sounds familiar too, it's not 'Children Of The Grave' but it's quite close rhythmically.

Hey,could that outtro jam be,"In for the kill" by Budgie?

Maybe, I think I have both the VH and Budgie versions somewhere. I'll give them a listen

that section that you are talking about can be heard on "Somebody Get Me a DR" after Ed and ALex jam and Dave goes into "I'm So Glad".... I also have heard it I think on MSG 3-30-84 during "you really got me".... Actually I think some of the older boots maybe even Pasedena 77 they played it with "You Really Got Me".... usually at the break point of the song.....

    Summertime Blues--Eddie Cochran

Well I'm gonna raise a fuss
And I'm gonna raise a holler
    About workin' all summer
Just tryin' to earn a dollar
Well, I went to my boss
    Who governs me
    He said, "No, dice, bud
    You gotta work late"

    Sometime I wonder
    What I'm gonnna do
    There ain't no cure
    For the summertime blues

Well, my mom and papa told me
Now you better earn some money
If one of you is gonna go
    Ridin' next Sunday
Well, I didn't go to work
I told my boss I was sick
He said, "You can't use the car
'Cause you didn't work a lick"

    Sometime I wonder
    What I'm gonnna do
    There ain't no cure
    For the summertime blues

    Gonna save two weeks
    Gonna have a fine vacation
    Gonna take my problem
    To the United Nations
Well, I went to my congressman
He sent me back a note
It said, "I''d like to help you, hon
But you're too young to vote"

    Sometime I wonder
    What I'm gonnna do
    There ain't no cure
    For the summertime blues

    Now there ain't no cure
    For the summertime blues
    Now there ain't no cure
    For the summertime blues
ASHES TO ASHES...DUST TO DUST...IF THE WOMEN DON'T GET YA, THE WHISKEY MUST!!...
