Hey folks - I currently own Live at Magic Mountain 1977, Thats all Folks and Covers Band from Pasadena - I've got them at a local music store that carries its boots behind the counter. point is, while im pretty happy with the sound quality of Magic Mountain and Thats All Folks, I have a real, real hard time listening to Covers Band...since the store has more boots that I'd like to get, but I do not want them if the quality sucks and/or is generally unlistenable, can someone tell me what sounds the best or whether or not these are worth owning? "At the Best", "The Beginnings of 5150", "Live in Japan 1978"? Thanks...each of these are like $40, so I do want to spend wisely....

I'd spend the money on "Live in Japan 1978". It's actually an excellent audience recording, and I'd also buy "The Beginnings of 5150" disc you mention. That sounds like "The Dawn of 5150", only with a different title. Everything on there will be rough demos of all the songs that eventually made it onto "5150", with the exception of "I Want Some Action", which should've been included instead of cut from the final mix.

<snip... nothing else matters after the Dave era...>

I agree that the Live and Loud recording has very good sound.

Maybe it's too obvious, but there are many recording reviews at www.vhboots.com -- you can check there before plunking down the cash on a recording.

My trade site is at http://go.to/MyList but I don't provide any reviews.

Have you listened to Covers Band from Pasadena with headphones cranked up? I LOVE that boot--amazing set list!!!!!!Van Rothin' doin' Twist and Shout!!!!!!I think the crowd noise just adds ambience to the recording...if you listen closely, you can hear pool being played.

If the sound is even passable, the band makes it worth the cash IMO. Not that I have that many, but that's been my experience.

My favorite moment from "Live & Loud" is when Dave stops in the midle of Ice Cream Man to ask the crowd, "Are you gonna clap your fuckin' hands or what?" Great show and boot!
