Forgive me if this has been brought up, but I am a new transplant from the dome and haven't visited here before.. I just read yesterday in Gene Simmons new book "Kiss and make up" That Ed actually met with Gene to discuss joining Kiss after Ace left the band while Vinnie Vincent was on lead guitar for Kiss. I consider myself a huge fan of VH and a pretty big Kiss fan as well and I never heard this before. I know that Gene had something to do with helping VH break but I had no idea that Ed actually was actually interested in playing with them... the story is on pg 86 of Gene's book... any of you ever heard this before or is it BS on the part of Gene??? Actually, Gene has been telling this story since 1995 or so.

    Thus, its not anything new.

Eddie was not so happy working with Dave in VH anymore and was going through the motions (as he usually does). He met up with KISS when they were working on "Creatures of the Night" in '82. At the time, Ace Frehely was pretty much gone. KISS had a number of players on the album including Vinnie Vincent, who ended up being the new guitar player. Ed talked with Gene and may have said out of frustration in wanting to join KISS.

Gladly, we all know what had transpired.

KISS were doing their last tour with makeup then (1982-83) so can you imagine Ed with makeup on??

Isn't it also rumored the Gene encouraged Ed to go back and STAY in Van Halen? Whatever happened, I'm glad Ed remained...

If Ed thought Dave's ego was big, wait until they'd have gotten to about "Animalize" and he'd have to look over at Gene in a wig!

Hey, in the Gene Simmons book, on pg. 132, Gene says :"...Then I produced their demo at Electric Lady studios- thirteen to fifteen songs, most of which wound up on the first and second albums. Some of those were my arrangements."

Ok, so with the "Some of those were my arrangements" part, does he mean he wrote some of those songs? If he did....was he given credit? If he didn't, why the hell is he saying he is?

By the way, this book is great, even if your not a big KISS fan, it's got some funny stories. The way he descibes his fart in the pool on pg. 46, last paragraph is so funny. The way he descirbes it. READ IT!

Just means Gene wants credit for something he didn't do, IMO. I think he feels he needs some ass-kissing from Ed and the boys for helping them get started.

It would have been funny if the move had gone down. I can see it now on the front page of Billboard:

Gene Simmons,Paul Stanley-FIRED from KISS, New guitarist to take over!

    I'd pay to see that...

Eddie Van Halen could not have existed in KISS for a second. Gene and Paul have the two biggest egos in the world. Mark St. John later talked about how he wasn't even allowed to decide what to do in his solos. They were completely mapped out for him. And none of their guitarists after Ace (besides Vinnie) wrote a lot of material for the band...even Vinnie talked about how limited he felt. KISS is a great band, and I will get Gene's book, but Gene is an egomaniac asshole.

Ace Frehley didn't play a note on the CREATURES OF THE NIGHT album, but it is almost considered a KISS fact that Eddie did record a solo or two for the album when visiting the band during the sessions. It is definitely true that none of those solos were selected for the album. Not only have the band stated this, but I could tell in a second if Ed's playing when listening to it. But Eric Carr did state that Eddie did record a solo for the song CREATURES OF THE NIGHT.

Maybe, or maybe not. Eric Carr had not yet become an established band member. If Eddie had joined Kiss, under the condition that they took Alex also, I don't think Gene & Paul would have objected.

I haven't read Simmons current book, but the way this story is told in the KISSTORY book indicates that Eddie's offer to join Kiss was during the Fair Warning sessions, which would have been earlier than 82. It would have completely fucking sucked to have never heard Fair Warning, just so KISS could have had a couple decent albums (it would have never lasted longer than that anyway.)

I bought his book a few days ago, and I'm 5 chapters into it.

For someone who claims that this book has "the truth", I'd like to know why he omitted his former job as a 6th grade teacher. He seems to have jumped from Israel, to NY, to forming Wicked Lester and then KISS.

I'm anxious to see what other "truths" he spews forth.
