i'd always understood that van halen's early stuff was recorded more or less on the fly..
vh2 & fw ( one foot out the door.. ) being two memorable examples..
is this true ?
it added greatly to the 'atmosphere' of vh and was something that always set them apart fro me from the 'mainstream'..

Depends on your definition of on the fly. VH1 and 2, most of the songs were already written. They were recorded in a way that was basically live and finished pretty damn quickly. I think they made Jamies cryin for vh1. That could be considered on the fly I guess.

Yeah, they laid down the main tracks for VH1 & 2 in a live setting, then did vocals and solos later. I'm pretty sure much of 2 was recorded during the 1 sessions, and they just sweetened em up a little in post.
