I must apologize to whoever concerned for posting a response to this very issue on the review thread.......a thousand pardons. Now that I am in the proper forum for this discussion, I would like to again address the comment made by Watney in his review of a recent Dave show. Of course this is only my opinion and I certainly do not expect for the whole world to agree that Ed is the king of all rock guitar. But however, that is how I feel. The thought of a guitar solo played by Brian Young being far superior to the original version of Ed's "Eruption" off of VH I, is pretty laughable to me anyways. I have heard Brian many times and do agree that he is fantastic, but Eddie he is not. Vai and Satriani also have benefited from all of the many "neat noises" and techniques that Eddie brought to the picture. Eddie was the father of most everything that is cool as far as hard rock guitar is concerned. At the same time, Eddie learned a lot of the basis of his style from Clapton, Blackmore, and Jeff Beck. But he has basically invented most of the cool things that most rock guitarist do today. As far as people being able to copy Eddie's solos, any guitarist that is advanced enough, should be able to do that anyways. Not just Eddie's, but Satch, and Vai, and etc. I have never heard anyone yet come close to the magic that Eddie makes when he plays. His feel, tone, attack, and rhythmic abilities, are the best. He is the king of rock guitar as far as I'm concerned. It will take something beyond special to make me change my opinion regarding this as well. But as I said before, this is only my opinion and I do not mean to offend Watney or anyone else in this matter, I just would like to hear what others out there think about this as well. Peace.......

You mean somebody was actually brain dead enough to say Brian is/was better than Ed?

I don't think Brian's MOM would even say that

Oh, yeah, still wrong thread, Opinions, here we come! (or closed, this is stupid - TJ1, you shouldn't have given the moron the satisfaction of a response to such idiocy)

In anyone's mind, this should be no contest. Eddie, hands down--don't forget, Brian *tries to play* like Eddie. Eddie is the One and Only.

Go figure... Some people liked to be crapped on too. So I'm not totally surprised someone would prefer Brian to Eddie...

No disrespect to Brian who can certainly play Ed's stuff like a mofo, but you've got to be kidding if you can even put him in the same league with the real Edward Van Halen. Silly silly.

Ed wins hands down. Ed invented that shit in his head folks. Brian can only dream that he coul;d write music so good.

Props to Brian for capturing Ed's energy and licks.

But are we talking about writing or playing?

Thing is, I've heard Brian play Ed's stuff. He did an excellent job of imitating Ed.

To make a opinion if he's better then Ed, wouldn't you almost have to hear Brian play some of his own material... and likewise have Ed play it too?

Then you can really make an evaluation.

Ed's Ed. Brian's Brian and he's awesome at playing Ed. I've never heard him play anything other then VH stuff... so I really couldn't even begin to make a comparison.

Could SOMEONE play Ed better then Ed? Absolutely. Why not? Just cuz Ed's a brilliant guitarist, doesn't mean that there isn't someone out there who can play better then he. That's absurd to even think otherwise!

Could someone play Ed better than Ed? Of course not, then it wouldn't be Ed would it?

Can someone play better than Edward? Depends on what your taste is I guess. From what I know from all my years of guitar playing and listening to music, nobody is better than Ed to me.

It all depends on your definition of "better". Yes, some players can play, or shred, or whatever you want to call it, faster or maybe technically cleaner than Ed but speed and chops ain't everything. Eddie is the best I've heard to combine innovative technique and soulful playing along with brilliant songwriting to become the guitarist of his generation. The only other guitarist that you can really compare him to as far as contributing to the guitar goes is Hendrix.

To even compare a guy that just cops his licks to that legacy is just stupidity...
