Check out this interview with Teddy T! It was done at the time when he was involved with the production of FUCK. I hadn't seen this before. Great read!

Hmmmm... just a thing that I wondered about.....

if Ed really understands sound THAT well as Ted said... why the hell are the sound and the mixes of both OU812 and VH3 THAT fucked up then?!?!

He implied that Ed understands guitar sound well, not overall band sound necessarily. The VH3 mix sucks, but his guitar sounds good. Same with OU812, Ed's tone isn't the problem, it's the ENTIRE mix.

Ok, agreed. I personally prefer the OU812 guitar sound to the one on 5150 myself.

Plus... the guitar sound of VH3 ain't that great either. But then again... the whole album ain't really whatcha'd call a "masterpiece".

Still... ne'er let Ed do another album without a proper producer by his side, whoever that'd be.

I was always under the impression that Don Landee was more responsable for the lack of bottom on OU812. Plus, Mike Post "produced" VH3; nuff said on that subject. I think Balance *sounds* like the best album overall.

Well, lemme put it this way. The "Monsoon" sound system in my car really thumps out the bass - just shy of shamefully. I play Pink or Ice Cube, I got to roll the bass back to clean it up a bit, 'cause a Bug jes' cain't stand hearing buzz and clatter on top of his bass. Even Ozzy's latest, while it needs a hi-end roll-up, doesn't mind dialing back the bass a bit.

Iron Maiden's last one - thing sounds like it was recorded thru a sock; good thing the songs all kick ass, 'cause clearly, we have another group of musicians confusing a lack of dynamic range for "warmth" in their crappy, analog master. Even so, the stereo belts out the bass.

On this same, bass-heavy stereo system, the first six VH albums all need something like a 6 dB roll-up in the bass range before you can even hear Mikey; make the highs a little crisper, and you've just about washed Dave clean out. Similar story on 5150 and OU812. Seems to me you coulda brought Ed out by goosing his 1.5 to 6k range, rather than by dialing back the low end.

Unlawful Carnal, on the other hand, went a little too far in the other direction. Al shines out pretty as you please, thanks to his new drum room; the rest is all murky and muddy. Johns supposedly said one of the studio monitors was "spanked" (hence the song); I've always wondered if F U C K sounds the way it does because it was tuned through blown-out monitors.

So here's the bone, the olive branch, the one Sam Halen concession a Bug will ever make: sonically, Van Halen's tenth album is indeed the most "Balanced".
