Van Halen, the greatest rock band in the history of music, is actually, indirectly responsible for the current state of the music industry (the rock part of it, not the crappy pop part). It's common knowledge that the metal craze of the 80,s and early 90's was directly influenced (and participated in) by Van Halen. The hair bands, even the ones who cared more about looks than music, are the inferior (yet still usually cool) direct offspring of VH. Now, there never would have been a grunge explosion-never would have been the need for one in the eyes of those who saw it that way-if it were'nt for the hair bands, and the 80's metal mania. Therefore, if VH wasn't so great, and didn't influence so much metal in the 80's and 90's for people to get sick of, we never would have had grunge, and everything that's come since then. Thanks alot, Van Halen, for being so great!

PS Please save us now, from the current music, like you did in 78, saving us from disco and punk.

And VH can thank bands like Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath ETC. and bands like Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath can thank Rhythm and Blues players. It's all a derivative of something in the past. I would not say that VH is responsible or is the end all and be all to Rock.

you know ive said this before . but most of the new metal bands are influenced or at least fans of 70 s and 80 s rock/metal. if you went to their concerts or read their interveiws they always pay tribute. alot of those players list eddie as their favorite guitarist and how vh1 made them want to play guitar. thaqt doesnt mean they have to be the new van halen. ok now proceed with the flames and calling me a liar.

Yes Van Halen influenced a lot of bands, even Korn. Again, is that something to be proud of?

Pantera certainly is about as un-VHish as it gets and those guys are HUGE Van Halen fans.

Well said, sounds like a prayer...

Oh wilst thou pick up your instruments of loudest and thunder and smite those who do not playest music in thine own image. Deliver us, O mighty VH, from those who would make foul noises upon the land. We ask that you release the sleeping lion from it's cage, to go forth and kill all in it's path. Amen.

Amen Vince!!! VH was a big fat branch on Rock's tree... but it ain't a root!! The roots run deep into the 1940's & 50's.

I guess I wasn't very clear. I didn't mean to indicate that VH is a big influence on the new bands. There really isn't much they have in common. What I was saying is that because Van Halen was so great, and there was an overload of hair bands, who were basically wannabe VH's. People got sick of them, and that paved the way for Nirvana, the grundge era, and everything that is a derivative of it-the new crap.
