Anybody know of any books that has the painting this guy did that VH used on the cover of Fair Warning? And if the original is featured at an art gallery anywhere in the world? I think it'd be cool to check it out. Maybe even pick up a replica to hand up.

I believe it is in a museum in England. I'm sure Glenn has the name and address for it.

The original painting is in the hospital where they filmed the Elephant Man, which I believe is in London, England.

I've checked out several books on William Kurelek, but haven't come across that particular picture.

Cornell University professor Jim Maas used to use the entire picture (the Fair Warning cover is only a small part) on the back of his text for Psych 101.

Incidentally, the picture is called "The Maze". The link above is from a brief discussion we had about the picture in 101 a while back. I think it was Sweet William who informed us of the name of the painting.

I'm proud to say a Canadian artist's painting is featured on the cover of my favorite Van Halen record.

Just for the record, the VHE shows that Kurelek died in 1972 while any website I've found on him shows that he died in November of 1977 of cancer.

If you have an opportunity, you should definitely read about William Kurelek's life. He suffered for most of his life with severe mental illness. His art talent was discovered while in a mental hospital and became an important part of his therapy. He scenes on the Fair Warning cover and in the rest of the maze are recollections of abuse he suffered (for example, he is the kid getting beat up and the girls pointing are his sisters).

Interesting stuff, plus it is a good diversion as we continue to suffer in VH silence.
