Clueless writer's opinion of Michael Anthony below. His e-mail and phone# are below too. Most of the article is about Wyman of the Rolling Stones. I cut and pasted the stuff about MA and also how he compares him to Courtney Love.

    * Courtney Love. After her songwriting talent was laid to rest in Seattle in April '94, Courtney was more than ready for an acting career. What was her attention-starved, drama-soaked time in the spotlight with Kurt Cobain if not the world's longest audition?

I'm so sick of ppl ripping on Mike. His backup vocals and Ed's guitar make the VH sound, no talent?? I'll bet this writer has loads of it himself.

That Cockoran guy is a major embarassment to the Austin media. For all the years I lived there I never read anything but tripe spewing from this idiot. For a town that bills itself as the Live Music Capital of the World... I can't see why the Statesman keeps him on staff... other than to create controversy which sells papers... He's a tool... nothin to see here... move along folks...

What about Ringo Starr? You wanna talk about a lucky bastard, there's one for you. He was far less a contributor to his band than MA. Anyways, I live in Austin, so I'll keep a lookout for Mr. Corcoran and his delusions.

I don't think it's too contoversial a point that Mike Anthony is one of the luckier musicians in the biz.

Yea... If you really give some of the VH bass lines a listen, there really isn't anything spectacular in it. Most of it is simplified, and that in turn let's Ed have more freedom with his fills. As for Ringo: He's in the same boat as Mikey. They were both lucky bastards. Unfortunatley, neither one can stand on their own.

And I'm telling you that they both kick ass! Neither band would be the same without those guys in the mix. Ringo and Mikey rule.

I find all these comments on Mikey very disrespectful.

I agree that w/out Mike's voice in the mix, VH loses an integral part. I'm suprised that anyone would differ from that opinion. VH w/out Mike would never sound the same. Just because Mike isn't the most technical of bass players doesn't mean he isn't one of the neccessary parts of the whole. There's plenty of "supergroups" to point to that have proven that fact. Chemistry is the most important part of any successful group and if you don't agree, you obviously don't understand the mechanics of a band.

While some may consider Mikey at best, a very basic Bass player, his attitude and backing vocals are an irreplaceable factor of Van Halen. Its true, they wouldnt be the same without him.
