Actually I saw sonething on ET last night that said Wacko Jacko is in serious debt in the $200 million range, and Sony's got him by the balls (if he still has any) in regard to The Beatles catalog that Jackson owns.
He needs to make a hit album very soon.

I seriously doubt Ed gets any royalties. First of all, when you make a guest appearance on an album, most likely you charge a fee or paid a standard "scale" for an appearance.

Secondly, some bands get more or less money from record sales. It depends on the contract that they sign. "X" amount of $/sale. I would suppose Michael didn't make nearly enough from "Triller" as one might assume simply because it was the part of an already exsisting contract. "Bad", too. I believe it wasn't until after that when he signed a Billion dollar contract for future records.

For example. Mariah Carey signed a record deal with Sony for $50 Million for 4 records. She released "Glitter" and it bombed. Still, she received $10.25 Million for it. Sony then decides to "Buy out" her contract for $10 Million. Just to get out from under thier contract with her. So she made over 20 Million for that pile of shit album Glitter.
    It's all in the contract.

Most artist, though don't receive much money from record sales. Unless they have a long track record and re-sign with a label who wants them and is willing to pay. Most get their money from touring and radio play as well as songwriting.

The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-

In several articles and interviews with EVH, he has stated that he did the solo as a favor to Quincy Jones, and that he did not get dime one.

So - the only rewards EVH reaped from "Beat It" was the pride of doing good work. LOL!!

Royalties have no real standard, so the rates and licensing agreements can vary from artist to artist.

IF EVH had not done the solo as a favor, and were getting a royalty, it would probably be in the neighborhood of 3-10% of net sales of either the album or the single, or both. Like I said, royalties have no real standard, and can be negotiated individually. That is not to suggest that the music industry does not have an "industry" standard - they do - but, it is not always followed.
