This is taken directly from Ralph Saenz's diary on Metal Sludge, just in yesterday:

"I ran in to Eddie Van Halen at Staples office supply store.
He was in line with me and I was freakin out.
I decided to introduce myself to him.
I said, "Ed hey man my name is Ralph and I play in the Atomic Punks you know the tribute to your band" he said, "oh yea I ve seen the video, not bad".. I was thinking that this would be a great time for me to ask if he wanted to get together and write some songs cause I know they are looking for a singer, but I chickened out.
I said goodbye and walked out of the store. He came out right after and asked me, "Is that all you do, you know play in the tribute thing?", I turned around and walk right up to Ed and I said, "I'm not cutting my hair and playing some shitty music I want to Rock for real" and Ed said, "So do I !" at that point I thought this is the perfect time for me to say 'let's jam' but I got scared.
I mean shit this is Eddie Van Halen the guy that changed my life without even know.. Do I turn into the crazy fan that I am? Fuck I feel like I missed a great chance to actually sing the band that I am a tribute to.
Oh well at least we know now that Eddie still wants to rock.."

This looks to me as heading towards singer #4. Not necessarely Ralph himself, but certainly not Sam nor Dave. Be prepared, my friends.

What was Eddie doing at an office supply store? Making up flyers for a new singer?

Well I certainly believe Ralph if he says he met EVH. I would love to see him get to at least jam with VH one time...hell, he's met Dave several times, Mikey's jammed with the Punks onstage, so why not the VH bros.

Interesting to say the least. Maybe Eddie WAS making flyers that he and his brother will put on cars. They will say, 'LOOKING FOR A SINGER. PLEASE CALL 555-5150 AND ASK FOR ED'.

The Atomic Punks have a great website. I recently downloaded the videos of their live performances, and they're really impressive. Especially Ralph. Dave is the man, but Ralph sounds more like the Dave of 1984 than Dave himself does now.

From what I understand, Dave is also a fan of Ralph.

One thing is sure, Ralph don't need no audition—he proves himself night after night.
This guy is in top form, singing as much as he does...
He's a class act, but he sounds like one of us, practically loosing it when he meets his idol, and not daring to ask the questions that we all want to ask...

You know what, most people think I don't like Dave. I loved the old Dave. He was great when he was with Van Halen, but He killed himself when he left Van Halen and has never shown that he is willing to give back to his fans after we made him rich. Ralph Saenz on the other hand is the best of both worlds in my opinion. He is David Lee Roth with Sammy's generosity. I saw them last summer a couple of times and they were awesome rockers and awesome people in general. I talked to Ralph and he was willing to sign stuff, talk, take pictures and just hang out and party with his fans. Many people think that because he idolizes Dave, he is Dave and that is far from the truth. He talked very highly of Sammy and gave his respects to Gary for trying. There was no ego there. If singer #4 is an option for Van Halen, then I say get Ralph. He is one of the few logical choices they have.

I'll call Ralph today and see what I can find out.

And Ralph likes ALL Van Halen (yes Sammy too), he's a fan like everyone else.

That's really too bad that he didn't ask to jam, it sounded like there was a great opportunity there. Although I can completely understand how he was feeling, when I met Ed I was a fucking blubbering idiot and I am sure he was trying to find the quickest most diplomatic exit to the situation. Sounds to me like Ralph is a pretty good guy and I woudn't mind seeing him get his chance.

Whatever Alex. We'd all like Dave or Sam back, but don't talk shit about Ralph in the process. He's a great person, great singer and basically I don't want to read it. Do not slam Ralph on this board, go do it somewhere else.

BTW if you've heard the Atomic Punks you wouldn't exactly be calling Ralph a slouch. Dave only wishes he still sounded that good.

As much of a talent that Ralph is, Ed himself has said it time and time again that he is not into being a nostalgia act. Bringing Ralph in would be doing just that. As the lead singer of the Punks and Metal Shop, he is at the top of the game, but if he was dubbed as the new singer in VH, it would be Cherone all over again. Just without the MTV Live at the 10 spot self gratification act.

Guys, you're reading way too much into this anyway. Ralph just ran into Ed at a store, he's hardly joining Van Halen tomorrow. It wasn't that big of a deal, just an interesting little story.
