This was taken from the official Metallica site, interesting...hehe

http://www.metallica.com/m2/index.html

With Jason fully established, the band went back to record their fourth full-length album, ...And Justice For All, released in August 1988. The explosion that had been threatening for sometime finally happened. It reached #6 on the US charts, received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal/Hard Rock album, the band blew headliners Van Halen off-stage during the Monsters Of Rock tour and subsequently embarked upon an enormous worldwide tour. It was even the moment they finally delved into video territory, although the footage for 'One' was most certainly the most 'anti' video video of it's era.

I thought Metallica were the best band that day too!!! Although the Scorpions and Dokken rocked out also...VH was ok...but something was missing...

I didn't think Dokken were so hot that day. The rest of the bands rocked though. All in all, the day was a blast!

Yeah...I liked how Metallica said they would never do videos too. They've turned into posers and haven't released anything worthwhile since And Justice....
Jason Newsted is better off w/o those lameos.

If you were into thrash metal back then. Then yeah, they did blow VH away.

Lets now compare the two bands:

Lead singers: VH had Sammy, Suetallica had Hetfield. Advantage Van Halen (If I were to start a band I would take Sammy over James, plus IMO Sammy is a better guitar player)

Bass players: VH had Mikey, Suetallica had Jason. Advantage Van Halen (Comparable on bass, but Mike's harmonies gave him the advantage)

Drummers: VH had Alex, Suetallica had Sue Ulrich. Advantage Van Halen (Mr. Sue just pounds, Big Al has rythym (sp). Advantage Van Halen

Guitarists: VH had Eddie, Suetallica had Kirk. Advantage No brainer here, Van Halen.

Now remove Sammy and add Dave, Metallica is a club band and Van Halen is an arena band.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.

dude that is an IDIOTIC comparrison..... Metallica blew them away, song for song HELL YEAH....IF DLR was with VH and it was VH/DLR tunes, then it would be two GREAT BANBDS playing....but nooooooooooooooooo they had to play all those songs off of 5150 and ou812, and the Sammy solo tunes....yuck...blech....

SONGS(all of Metallica's BEST MATERIAL EVER OFF of the first three albums and the EP's), Metallica has the advantage over Van Hagar(5150 and OU812)....

hmmmmmm "Diposable Heroes" vs "Why Can't This Be Love"???? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no contest...
Metallica do suck now, but back then they were the SHIT!!!!

We talked about this same thing a year or so ago, I think there is a thread in here about it somewhere.

Metallica ain't been the shit since '86.

Two different bands, two different sounds, two different vibes musically.

BTW I'll take "5150" over "One" any day. Eddie's solo on that live alone takes care of that.

Al is lightyears better than Lars Ulrich, and as far as Eddie goes compared to either Hetfield or Hammett, it's not even worth discussion. Newstead is a less than impressive bass player, he pounds his strings hard though. Cliff Burton on the other hand was the shit.

James Hetfield can't sing, so who cares anyway. I love how he thinks he can now though, that is what is even funnier. Just yell ya idiot, it sounded much better.

It's just apples and oranges, two bands with two totally different visions.

Excellent post, Brett!!!

It's like comparing Ozzy to ZZ Top during the '80s. They both were did their thing well but the style of music was different.

They could easily blow away OUeatcheese2 though.

Shit - I didn't even go into the stadium until the Scorps took the stage. I was too busy drinking in the parking lot!

At the time, I could have really cared less about Kingdom Come, Dokken or Metallica!!

The Scorpions and Van Halen were great!

ummm have you ever heard any of his Flotsam and Jetsam stuff????? If not listen to their first album, Jason was on that one....Also how can you say Newstead is less than impressive, do you know how difficult it is to work up the endurance to play all of the lightning fast Metallica riffs night after night, and play them with precision????? Damage Inc, Disposable Heroes, One, Fight Fire With Fire, Battery, even Blackened is a bit of bithc, etc etc.....technically that material not easy for any band or individual to pull off correctly, with ferocity and power....... the drumming, fast and heavy, guitar irffs from hell, and Bass riffs from Hell...

Also it should be noted, that when Newstead was in Metallica it's pretty well known he was "ordered" by Lames and Lars what to play, he had very little input to his own Bass Playing....
but again old Metallica up until Justice kicks ass.................. today they suck ass...hey kinda like VH right??????

OLD(dlr) VH = KICK ASS
OLD Metallica = KICK ASS

So let me get this straight; on the official Metallica site, it preaches that Metallica was the best band of that tour?

Wow, color me shocked.
