    whoa! what's this?

i picked up the re-master of 1984, and while scanning through the credits, noticed that Michael McDonald (of Doobie Brothers fame) is listed as a co-writer on "I'll Wait"...

(this jumps out like sore thumb!)

this is *not* listed on the original vinyl or original CD, a near as i can tell, and i have both...

has this already been covered here in links?

if so, my apols - but if not, anyone know how this little piece of trivia went un-noticed or un-talked about all this time?

the connection is obvious - Ted Templeman produced both bands, and Ed and McD were two of his favorite artists to work with (and the Doobs were one of my faves as well!) - so i think it's great that there actually *was* a hook-up somewhere...

but did the they squash the collab facts upon release so as not to add fuel to the "pop-sellout" slams that came with "Jump", et al?...

    anyone got any clues?

    thx - curious

It's been rumored for awhile, but this is the first I've seen it in print.

I heard this bit of info a few years ago.

"I'll Wait" is probably the only Van HALEN song that I would skip over on a normal basis. That's probably the reason why. While Michael McDonald has written some hit songs, and has a very distinctive voice, he ruined the Doobies in my opinion. They went really limp after he joined the band. Not to surprised to hear that the limpest Van HALEN song was partially his fault too.

Van HALEN is: Dave, Eddie, Mikey, Alex. Any questions?

yeah, it looks as though macdonald had a hand in that tune.

while i can't really appreciate much of his doobie bros. work, i can admit that he's a good songwriter. i hate the way he swallows the mic, though.

still, I'll Wait is an excellent tune, highlighted by one of the most tasteful solos on 1984.

Hell, who knows how much effort it takes to "co-write" something. All he could have done was say, "Man, why don't you guys do a song about being infatuated with a photo in a magazine." That would qualify him without ever touching it musically.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't I'll Wait a sticking point with Roth in that he didn't want it on the album but Eddie did? Could the whole co-writer thing have had anything to do with that?

    interesting point.

but then, why would there be all the other cover songs VH did if roth felt so strongly about that sort of thing?

a good song is a good song regardless of the writer or the writing process.
if macdonald had a hand in anything, it would most likely be the music. he probably inspired eddie in some keyboard parts.

anyway, if roth hated it, it should just be considered payback for forcing eddie to use his original moog riffs to do dancing in the streets instead of an original VH tune. (not saying roth was behind that - i'm not really sure)

at least I'll Wait is an original tune.

FORD - snap out of it. You like I'll Wait.

    Listen again. Be reflective.

I thought of that myself. If my point was the case, the train of logic would go like this:

    1. Covering a song is okay, assuming it's a song the band can agree on doing and get a good take going on (YRGM, WHATGTG, OPW, etc).

    2. Writing an original song is okay, assuming it's a song the band can agree on doing and get a good take going on.

    3. Brining in a co-writer is a no-no, since the band should either do the work all by itself or not do it at all.

Of course, to lay some credibility to this, when Eddie wanted to bring someone in to help Sammy with lyrics near the end of that era, Sammy pitched a fit, but Eddie was behind it. I suppose as long as the music is something that inspires him, Eddie is okay with sharing the billing to a degree (probably would get offended with someone trying to write a guitar part for him though).

Anyway, that's just me thinking out loud. Suffice to say, I think the part of I'll Wait not done by VH is minor - so minor they didn't even bother to mention it right off in any of the original prints of the album.

With Eddie having so many musician friends, you have to wonder how many times they've given him little suggestions or inspirations that he then incorporated into his songs.

Have to disagree with ya on that one FORD.

I'l Wait is a kick ass song!

( a song can be kick ass without having to be "heavy" IMHO)

But everyone's entitled to their opinion...this one is just mine

Is the word "fool" in "I'll Wait"?
Because any song Michael McDonald has a hand in writing HAS to have the word "fool" in it somewhere.

Hey Olen.... you did a "levels of VH thing awhile ago. Was this MacDonald(?) part of that list? I don't remember. That might change a few things.
