I noticed at the VH Bootleg Discography that there is a boot from late 1975 that has a version of the legendary ERUPTION. It is said to be the earliest known version on tape.
What I wanna know is when did Ed start playing it?
I mean, VH was out there playing backyard parties since like 1970. They finally hooked up with Dave and began playing clubs at the start of 1974.(after graduating high school)

How early on did Eddie start playing Eruption live?
Or was late 1975 the debut of it?

I guess its how you define Eruption. Most people equate the tapping part at the end with it. Edward didn't start tapping until '74 (I'm fairly certain) when he saw Zepplin in concert. So for you, if the tapping part = Eruption, then it couldn't have been befor '74.

But to my knowledge, Edward always did some kind of unaccompanied soloing between songs. I'm sure this was a precursor to the Eruption we all know.

    Not sure if this helps....

Hasn't Ed said in interviews that Zep's "Heartbreaker" solo inspired him to work on the tapping thing? I don't recall him mentioning needing to see Zep.

You got part of that right.
Eddie did say he got the idea from watching Jimmy Page doin' open hand pull-offs during the solo for Heartbreaker at a Led Zep concert he went to.
But he said it was in 1971, not 1974. It was back in 71' when Ed was like 15. He said it became a part of his playing since then.
So I just assume he had been doin' a solo spot since then and added in the tapping part. Well, technically speaking, the right hand hammer-ons.
I own boots from 76' and 77' that have Eruption on it. Funny thing is the version of Eruption he was unleashign in clubs was much wilder than the version that ended up on their debut album! It was almost like he toned it down a bit for the album.. lol
The club version was 2-3 minutes usually and just insane. The album version I believe clocked in at 1 minute 42 seconds.

I remember reading an interview(s) where Eddie said it was a Led Zeppelin concert at the L.A. (Inglewood) Forum in 1972.

Thanks for the clarification Badabing. Yeah I have a bunch of boots from '76 with "Eruption," and they are chocked full of crazy stuff. The album version is totally mellow in comparison for sure.

I'll have to relisten to that, but I do notice in some of them there is either no tapping or very little of it. Lots of whammy bar craziness.

As far as i can remember, there is no tapping in the version from 1975.

Didnīt he try to avoid this style live, because he was so afraid someone would steel his style and get a record deal because of that?
I have the Guitar world magazine, with the whole issue being VH featured, and there is an interview where Ed stated that. He also said that when he tapped live (which wasnīt too regulary) he turned around with his back to the audience, so nobody could see what he is doing.

Are we talking about the Live Anthology 75-81 bootleg??

He does a bit of, what sounds like, Only Women Bleed in there. He does some speed picking that sounds like the album version of Eruption, but that's about the only part that sounds like what Eruption became. No tapping as far as I can hear in there.

There's also an early part that sounds a bit like he's doing that harmonic tapping he does in the intro of Women In Love (the style, not the specific notes).

Guitarists, feel free to pick apart my wording!

I seem to remember Ed saying in a interview that whenever he would do the 'tap' thing, he would turn around so people couldn't see what he was doing.

He said that Al had told him to turn around so no one, who might be closer to getting a record deal, would rip him off. HA.

I remember seeing him turn around during the intro to Don't Tell Me on the Balance tour and Alex smirking at him. Every time he does something novel he tries to keep it from general knowledge, I think. Kind've silly, considering that he's been ripped off so much for so long...

I think he tapped but did so in a very restrained fashion. He wouldnt do it much live cuz too many dudes where tryign to scope him out. Even during that boot for the May 1976 gig at the Goldenwest Ballroom I think he held back many things.
He might play a quick tap-lick during a song but stayed away from it during Eruption.
Remember that May 1976 gig at Goldenwest was the one they where opening for U.F.O. and the great Michael Schenker. So no doubt Alex advised Ed to alter the ending of Eruption.
